KABUL: An Indian writer who authored a best-selling book about her dramatic escape from Taliban in 1995, has been shot dead in Afghanistan by suspected militants on Thursday, according to a BBC report.

Sushmita Bannerjee, 43, was killed outside her home in Paktika province.

The BBC report cites Ms Banerjee as working as a health worker in the province while filming the lives of local women as part of her work.

Police claimed that Taliban militants arrived at her home in the provincial capital, Kharana, tied up her husband and other members of the family, took Banerjee out and shot her.

They dumped her body near a religious school, police added.

No group has claimed the attack as yet.

Banerjee had moved to Afghanistan in 1989 after marrying Afghan businessman Jaanbaz Khan.

In her book 'A Kabuliwala's Bengali Wife', she narrates the story of her life in Afghanistan and her escape following the Taliban crackdown in 1993.

Her book was made into a Bollywood film 'Escape from Taliban' in 2003.
