Several human rights groups and political activists have demanded the government establish psychiatric support camps around the city for drug addicts and people with other psychiatric conditions.
Expressing their views during a session organised at the Karachi Psychiatric Hospital on Wednesday, they said that the initiative taken by senior psychiatrist Dr Syed Mobin Akhtar, needed to be replicated by others as well. “A rehabilitation centre is already working at Essa Nagri, which caters to many drug addicts,” said Pakistan Peoples Party’s minority wing general secretary Anwar Sultan Ghauri. “This proves that we need more psychiatric support for drug addicts.”
“The fact remains that a pragmatic approach is needed to particularly assist those who are hooked to drugs,” said Ghauri.
Marie and Sons Welfare Trust’s Asif Bhatti stated that depression was a growing incidence along with other main psychological ailments, which cause the affected person addiction to drugs. “Its fall out is on all sections of the society, particularly housewives,” he said, suggesting relief sessions for these women.
