Nanbais (bakers) around the city observed a shutter-down strike on Tuesday to protest against the district administration for not increasing the prices of bread. They also demanded a baker, who was arrested earlier, be released.
The district administration arrested around 100 bakers from different parts of the city for violating orders and fleecing consumers. “I brought stale bread at double the price from Karkhano market,” said Rehan, a restaurant owner, adding he waited for hours in a long queue.
“Any increase in the price of flour will result in higher price for bread,” said Muhammad Iqbal, the provincial president of a nanbai association. He claimed the government had significantly increased prices of electricity and petroleum products in August, which in turn led to an increase in wheat and flour prices.
