A man died on Sunday evening after the rickshaw he was a passenger in hit a truck on IJ Principal Road.
According to the police, Muhammad Ashraf, 70, a resident of Haripur, received a fatal head injury when the rickshaw he was in hit a stationary truck from behind near Pirwadhai Mor. The rickshaw was speeding, police said. The unidentified rickshaw driver, believed to be 18 or 19 years of age, fled the scene.
The Sabzi Mandi police have registered a case against the unidentified driver, but he has not been arrested so far, police said.
Ashraf had come to Rawalpindi to visit his newlywed son and daughter-in-law, who live in Bangash Colony, the police added. He was sharing the rickshaw with two other passengers after hiring it near Motorway Chowk, a Sabzi Mandi police officer said.
The other two passengers, Saqib Ilyas and Muhammad Rafiq, received minor injuries during the crash. Rafiq’s wrist was fractured and Ilyas suffered cuts and bruises.
Ilyas reported to the police that they had told the rickshaw driver to slow down but he kept speeding. The rickshaw hit a truck that had been parked on the road, said the police officer.
