GUJRANWALA:

“More than 150,000 animals have been affected by floods...as many as 10,000 have died,” said District Officer (Livestock) Dr Shaukat Mehmood Gondal said on Friday.

The officer said 300 villages in Wahndo, Kamoke and Wazirabad were flooded following the rains. “Many dairy and poultry farms have been swept away by floodwater,” he said. Gondal told Express News that the livestock department had set up 15 relief camps in the flood hit areas.

“More than 468,000 animals have been vaccinated and 15,000 have been given medicines at these camps,” he said. “45 veterinary doctors are working here round the clock,” he added.

He said he feared a shortage of meat over the coming days.

The district officer said he would talk to poultry farm owners and discuss the matter with the district coordination officer.
