Rain in Faisalabad kills woman, child

135mm rain was recorded in Faisalabad and 190mm in Islamabad, met office said.

RAWALPINDI/ ISLAMABAD/ LAHORE: Torrential rain in Faisalabad caused roofs of many houses to collapse killing at least one woman and a child on Wednesday, Express News reported.

Roofs of three houses collapsed because of the downpour, killing a woman along with a two-month old child and injuring several others.

A spokesperson of the meteorological department said that 135mm of rain was recorded in the city and predicted that there are chances of more rain to come.

The rain also caused many roads in Rawalpindi, Lahore and Islamabad to be submerged in water which made life difficult for the residents.

Earlier, Tehsil Municipal Authority (TMA), Water and Sanitation Authority (WASA) and district government in Rawalpindi had claimed that they had cleared out silt and solid waste from the drains and that there was no danger of the city being flooded.

However, continuous rain on Tuesday and Wednesday proved the claims wrong as rainwater choked in the drainage system, particularly in low-lying areas.

A spokesperson of the meteorological department said that 190mm of rain was recorded in Islamabad during the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, residents in Lahore were found complaining that apart from submerging the roads, the raging flood water had spilled into their houses.

Rain in Gujranwala also caused roofs of some of the houses to collapse, injuring residents.
