And here we are, bringing out Eid fashion lines; putting up billboards with pretty young models showing off the latest in shoes, and handsome men sporting the latest waistcoats with gilded buttons; and advertising flights to some delightful Eden or other on one of the seven airlines that condescend to fly into one of our airports.
Despite the fact that we are regaled daily with the latest figures of our brave young soldiers and policemen and levies and khasadars, and plain innocent civilians being put to the knife by the savages; shot dead; blown up and kidnapped for ransom. Of the latest jailbreaks with not one casualty suffered by the terrorists; of the newest attempt at attacking the airport of the capital itself by up to 20 of the murderers and that too on the very night that the US secretary of state is in town.
Not even the wanton killing of 13 poor Punjabi labourers, brutally killed in Balochistan by terrorists while on their way home for Eid; not even the bombing of a football game in Lyari in which 11, mostly teenagers and even younger, are blown up, moves a hair on our heads. We go for sehri and iftar at Lahore’s fancy restaurants, and tooling about in our fancy SUVs and BMWs.
Let’s face it friends: the Taliban and their cohorts have us over a barrel, helped along by those who say all will be well after the Americans leave Afghanistan. I can just hear the Taliban laughing up their sleeves as they advance their project of taking over the whole blessed country. All IS lost already: what is left is for us to beseech the terrorists to go easy on us. Unless, that is, we wake up and do something about it, and stand behind our army solidly to give it the support it needs to root out this evil.
Which reminds me: while I thought there was just the Corps of Military Police Centre (CMP) and School stationed in DI Khan Cantonment, we are now informed by fellow tweeter and good man Major Agha Amin, formerly of the 11th(PAVO) Cavalry, that there is a whole Artillery Division and two Brigades stationed just 10 minutes’ drive from DIK: near enough to hear the massive explosions caused by the rampaging Taliban.
And what indeed of the CMP Centre stationed in DIK city itself? Was no alarm raised; no probe sent to see what all the racket was about? Could this not have developed into an attack on the CMP itself? Will someone in authority, such as the ISPR, clarify this please? WE have to act soon, or else we are really, really done for.
Lethargically and very, very slowly, the PTI government has started to blame (let us not be afraid to name it) the army for not coming out to help when asked, not only by the local officials concerned, but by the Chief Minister of K-P himself: Dunya August 5, 2013.
The paper says that whilst the army was in the loop and took part in making the arrangements to face the onslaught as foretold in the intelligence reports, it was not there when the assault did happen. The K-P CM has gone to the extent of saying that he himself called the Corps Commander, etcetera.
These are most serious charges and while the ‘security establishment’ has said that it will share the inquiry report with the provincial government, you and I, reader, taxpaying citizens whose money pays for both the provincial government and the military, don’t know what the blazes is going on.
However, the K-P government, specially the Chief Minister, must answer some most critical questions: 1) What time did he first find out about the assault on that critically important jail which held so many violent criminals, one of them with a half-million dollars bounty on his head? 2) Who informed him in the chain of command: the Chief Secretary, the Commissioner, the IG Prisons,or the IG police? 3) What time did he call the Corps Commander for help and what was his exact response?
This is no laughing matter: this is that critical and perilous and dire time that comes upon nations facing extreme threats to their very existence; this is not to be fobbed off by either the government of K-P under whose watch this extremely dreadful event happened, or by the army which has been directly accused by an elected chief minister of the most strategically important province of the country of not doing its bounden duty: which is coming to the aid of the Civil Power when specifically requisitioned, not only by local civilian officials authorised according to law, but by the chief executive of the province himself.
The military too needs to look inwards and see where it failed. As if the earlier raids and attacks and killings and destruction of our assets (yes, such as AWACS; PC-3 Orions; and Naval helicopters) was not enough.
As the great poet said, this is that “tide in the affairs of men. Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; Omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries”. For us it simply means that if we do not stop confusing the people about who their real enemy is; if we do not start telling the truth about the terrorists’ ‘takeover’ project which started in 1994, a full seven years before the Americans ever entered the ‘War on Terror’; if we do not make the people fighting mad, we are dead in the water: like those sitting ducks we spoke about earlier.

I have simple question to ask. Is the military working for Govt of Pakistan or agent of Taliban ?
Sorry folks. Because of US brutality, ably assisted by Pakistan, the Taliban Genie has been released from the bottle, and payback time is arriving. Congratulation America. You have created another disaster, and as usual the country you are leaving will have to pay the Piper. Unfortunately, you will not be able to destroy the Sub-Continent infrastructure quite so disastrously. However, look at the bright side America. I am reasonably certain that you will not stop trying, and will implement some devilish plot you almost certainly have up your sleeve.
I have no words to explain my gratitude and admiration for the brave work you are doing sir. Bravo. Stay safe.
@Yousaf: Why Eid Mubarik to Hindus, Sikh and Christian? It doesn't mean anything to me atleast.
Will someone in authority, such as the ISPR, clarify this please? Taliban came and released their associates after butchering Shia prisoners with prior information to Deep State, what more clarification do you need?
@Ahsan Abdullah: Shafi saheb, great op Ed Can you do some research how much is spent on army vs police. Can by spending some money on police we can fight back better ? I agree with suggestion raised by mr ahsan.
very good article as always
Is it 2014 already? ++++++++++++++++ The daily violence in Pakistan gives that distinct impression.
See the big picture, change is written on the wall, Nawaz will impose sharia law to control the satiation than proclaim himself as Khalifa.
Its family planning.........Taliban style
@np: I meant to write 50 years ago, but wrongly wrote 25! Slip of finger on my keyboard! Thanks for bringing it out! But the question remains: why Miansahab is not ordering the Army to eradicate this menace & earn their salady (and the fat perks)?
@Ali Wali: Totally agreed. Double standards all around. They have sympathizers where it matter the most ...........
@Ali Wali: Totally agreed. I wish they don't play double game.
@Polpot: Yes, I am scared to see the destruction of my birth place Mardan and the country Pakistan. I grew up in Mardan in the late 50s and early 60s, I had friends of different faiths, Hindus,Christians, Ahmedis and Shias and some of them had immigrated from India. We all would get together and play games like any other teen agers will do. We visited each others houses and some time invited to eat. That was my town and my people, we did not hate any one and by the way some of us are still friends even after 50+ years. I sure longing for that time for my town and country Pakistan.
Eid greetings to all ...... this morning while driving to drop my nephew at the New Delhi Railway Station, we had to take three detours because of the Eid prayers as a large number of namazis had to be accomodated. All I saw were a few policemen guiding the traffic. Why I am writing this is because a country was formed ostensibly to save the muslims of the sub-continent from the "Hindu tyranny". But today, it is in what you people call " hindu India" that Muslim of any denomination can go out and offer namaz without any fear.....but sadly not so in the " land of the pure".
@K B Kale: "These incidents of lack of outrage that should lead to strong coutermeasures bring out clearly again that Pakistani Armed Forces are no more brave & fighting units that they were, say, 25 years ago who would fight to the last bullet and to the last soldier!"
Really they would fight to the last bullet and last soldier 25 years back? Must have been a momentary surge because 42 years back they sure did NOT fight to the last bullet and last soldier. 90,000 of them laid down their arms.
Too alarmist. Every Ramazan, terrorist attacks go up. It looks security is most lax in the fasting month. Efforts are needed in all three areas of intelligence gathering, coordination and fighting terrorists when the attack is actually launched. It is a long term challenge and there are no shortcuts. Still why did scores of police gather in Quetta when it is well known that funerals are easy targets. Sitting ducks by choice? The state must work to bring down the level of terrorist violence but no need to go overboard with doomsday warnings. .
We should all write and write - most of us can do just that. As for the army knowiong and doing nothing, well let the PTI find out that they are alone in the fight against some of these groups.
All Pakistanis strive to live and work in Britain (including our politicians) than why not handover Pakistan to British for sometime say 50 years or more.
The only solution i see is to handover the country to British for 50 years or longer perhaps. And no Independence movement please!
@Sonya: Dear Madam, How correct you are! Whenever Mian-sahab starts a focused attempt to improve relations with our country, the ISI start some mischief or the other. (God knows if ISI reports to your COAS!) During Vajpayee's regime a very strong attempt was made by Atal-ji & Mian-sahab but the villain Musharraf created Kargil. In 2007, when things again looked taking a better shape, another villain Hafiz Saeed (who is not in jail like Musharraf is, but should be and hopefully would be in near future) created Mumbai Massacre. In all my Marathi write-ups I always say that India should continue building bridges in spite of such hiccups, but we being a genuine democracy creates problems because the party in power has to fight with opposition when such incidents happen. Now also the killing of 5 Indian soldiers across LoC is muddying the waters of better relationship and BJP, whose Vajpayee started the dialogue with Miansahab, in late 90s, is now on opposition benches and raising a ruckus! God help both countries..... Pakistani wardi na jung jeet sakti hai na aman laane deti hai! It can play only negative role!
@Maulana Diesel: those few terrorists have penetrated every facet of security apparatus, and they have sympethisers sitting at position of control. Pakistani public and ordinary security officials will have to face this menace, either them and us, after all they are no more than 10,000, and we all know who will win.
@Absar: What would you like to read about ? The plans to make the area around Badshahi Masjid a Punjabi Cultural Zone complete with artisans as were in days gone by ,..?
@gp65: Why not Eid Mubarik to all..ie Hindu ,Muslim Sikh and Christian.
Mr KS since long very amicably you are raising the issues and very loudly crying but all is proving "BHAINS KAY AAGAY BEEN" Have you ever realised why it is so? I tell you the whole body of nation has so much been infested that even small surgery will also not cure it. Now a very big surgery is required. Do you have qualified and appropriate surgeon to undertake this surgery? To me in current lot not at all. So keep on playing your "BEEN" No light at the end of the tunnel. it is not a disappointment but acceptance of hard truth and reality on ground.
We already have enough forces, we lack intelligencd gathering capabilities. Our enemies are well trained and funded. Until we do not think ouy of box, it will be happening until end of 2014.
Who is behind these attacks? Do you really know that they are taliban? There would only be .009% taliban sympathisers but there are many foreign enemies of pakistan who fund the taliban. And give them training in afghainstan.
@lalai:
the politically correct term is migration, they were migrants fleeing poverty of central asia and afghanistan, for the rich plains of india. now a days of course the migrants get on their rickety boats and head for the riches europe, and plenty more besides, blond beauties.
@B These incidents of lack of outrage that should lead to strong coutermeasures bring out clearly again that Pakistani Armed Forces are no more brave & fighting units that they were, say, 25 years ago who would fight to the last bullet and to the last soldier! They are good only when they need to show off their 'bravado' against unarmed 'bloody' civilians and the 'bloody' civilian governments. They will give all sorts of excuses for avoiding to fight when, in fact, they should! Have they ever won a single war so far? But when it comes to 'administering' Martial Law against civilians and civilian governments, they are very impressive and at their best! So why does Pakistan spend so much money on arms & armament, salaries & fat perks of these cowardly Generals? Better trim them down and order them to baracks! Don't worry about us Indians! We will never attack Pakistan unless provoked! @Author Great article! It brings iut your pain and anguish very clearly!
The other day I saw a board in a shia protest saying ' yeh jo dehshat gardi hay - is kay peechay wardi hay ' that was not wrong I believe.
@ahmed41: I would point out that; 1) Just how many "hundreds" of TTP/militant fighters and commanders have been sprung from jail lately (DIKhan!), and Just how many MORE TTP/Militant types have been freed during civilian trial due to "lack of evidence" by terrified judges??? I would believe that these fighters were "Identified"! 2) Collateral damage is a reality of any war, more so in this case where the enemy delights in creating Maximum Collateral Damage among civilians! 3) This is NOT a civil war! This is an insurgency by a group trying to impose their warped vision of Pakistan on the public via the barrel of a gun!
@naeem khan Manhattan,Ks: We are scared to see our birth place is slipping away very slowly into the point of no return"" +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Did you really mean that adverb?
You seem to paraphrase your own articles when they get old only to publish them again. Can we have for once something new coming from you?
@numbersnumbers:
No, numbers:numbers sahib , what you are suggesting is OK in a conflict against a VISIBLE , identifiable enemy.
In some parts of the country the methods you advocate might work. But ,as is well known , there is a colateral damage to innocent citizens of all ages and all categories.
Further, Sir, the enemy is now well entrenched among the general population at large. This is within the various regions and provinces of the country.
So one has to think carefully. Perhaps there are no easy, mathematical solutions. No society can remain sane in a civil-war situation. To confirm this one only has to look into te recent past in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Sri Lanka.
Tough times ahead ?
You allow nato supplies to use your country for their routing. You take billions from the Americans in the name of war against terrorism. You allow them to violate your sovereignty by using drones against you. And then you claim to be neutral. You are not. You are clearly taking sides in this war and all these suicide attacks are a repercussion of this. Accept this fact and try to remain neutral.
Lets look at the horrors of the civil war in neighbouring Sri Lanka. And it is a Buddhist-majority country !! Time to think about the tide of the future.
Look at the US civil war !
What does the future hold ?
Good write up and reasoning as always about the perils facing Pakistan! However, I would add that NOW would be a good time to ask the Americans for help while they are still just next door in great numbers! Special forces/Seal Team type trainers and advisors would be of great help, along with (dare I say) MORE precision drone strikes against THE ENEMY in regions other than FATA in support of PAKISTANI HunterKiller type operations where the bad guys are put in the ground rather than in jail! Out of curiosity, WHY are these TTP types given civilian trials on civilian type charges, rather than being charged with TREASON AGAINST THE STATE by the ARMY (and then shot)?
I have realized it long time ago even when you were writing for Dawn that through your articles I get some very critical news and analysis. I have not come across any news or comments by any one that the Chief Minister of K-P has requested for help and the security forces stationed in DIK were in the loop. Thank you for letting us know. It is simple that some heads got to roll but unfortunately in our culture it is not practiced and some of these responsible people don't have the decency to resign. Sir, this negligence of the Corps Commander borders on criminality, in any civilized country they will be prosecuted for negligence and failure to do their duty for which they are paid very handsomely with all the perks this unfortunate nation of Pakistan could offer. We are scared to see our birth place is slipping away very slowly into the point of no return. As I understand that 40- to 50 thousands of our citizens has been killed ruthlessly by these religious fanatics and yet no body is waking up and making the nation wake up too from this long slumber. Sitting so far away, I can't wait to read your article on Thursday local time.
Hope we will read 100 times only this sentence of the author, "This is no laughing matter"
Maybe the jailbreak was part of the "peace & talks with the taliban" plan? ;)
Pakistani politicians, military establishment, security personnel and media people are running around like a chicken with its head cut-off whereas the Taliban directors, producers and lead actors are having popcorn sitting comfortably in their safe havens.
2014, when US leaves Afghanistan. The date Taliban, India, ISI, IK, and many more waiting for anxiously.
Those who wonder why we are not taking a aggressive and overwhelming force response to the so-called 'terrorists' do not realise they are not in the minority. These misguided and frequently violent 'terrorists' and their sympathisers are the majority. Our Armed Forces understand this but the 'moderate' muslims don't. All the disenfranchised 10's of millions whom the elite, the feudals, the bureaucrats, the industrialists, the so-called intelligenstia have suppressed and deprived the rights of over the last 60+ years are the silent sympathisers. So what goes around comes around. This time armed and ready and willing.
Masters of these sitting ducks are clever and rich, they live in luxurious housing societies, drive expensive cars and get promotions without leading sitting ducks in a battlefield. Time has come for these sitting ducks to consider some other option.
History is again repeating itself. The invaders from north are again sweeping across the whole country and our state's response is exactly compatible with what can be expected from the regions of Indian subcontinent that now makes Pakistan.i.e., zero resistance and absolute submission.
I shall use a phrase that I think aptly applies and I have used it before as well - When the arsonist now becoms the fireman, then putting out the fire becoms a problem.
The Army does not consider evil what you are calling evil. Ergo, it is not about to 'root' it out.
Excellent article! however there is one point to be noted over here. Whether, with the current strength of terrorists, we will be able to defeat them? And author has hit the nail that military has failed in its primary job i.e. to win the war! In the thing that really matters, ie. war, terrorists have defeated the establishment!
Great piece as always, Mr Shafi.
The question I have for you is why aren't our khaki overlords concerned? If they disagree with PTI's stance on TTP, why don't they protest? Normally, our khaki overlords are very vocal about their feelings when they want to propagate a message. The height of stupidity that was the memogate is one such example. Why isn't similar outrage coming from our khaki masters now?
The paper says that whilst the army was in the loop and took part in making the arrangements to face the onslaught as foretold in the intelligence reports, it was not there when the assault did happen.
Really?
I mean some people seriously expect the Pakistan Army to come and impede Project Caliphate? Do you guys even remember the motto of Pakistan Army, It reads- Iman, Taqwa and something or the other that I am too afraid to mention.
Few terrorists have virtually hijacked the entire country. And the security apparatus are merely sitting ducks.
