The session in Islamabad was called to discuss the possibility of holding local bodies elections by the deadline given by the Supreme Court earlier in July.
However, it was decided that since the provincial governments hadn't completed their legal formalities it would take longer for the ECP to hold the elections.
The Commission said that it would require 90 days to arrange local bodies elections after the provinces complete their legal formalities.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had earlier said on July 18 that all provincial governments must hold LB elections no later than September.
The Supreme Court bench had underlined that the LB polls are important in maintaining a contact between people and the government.

Khurshid Shah who was assigned responsibility of appointing ECP's commissioners let the PMLN appoint 3 out of 4. The only non-PMLN commissioner has already resigned.
@Baloch Insafian: Punjab Government has concluded the debate on LG bill a few weeks ago. Your beloved PTI didn't even bother to join the parliamentary debate. Next time, try to keep up. And yes, do enlighten us about the developments in KPK and Baluchistan as well. link text
no political parties except MQM want local bodies election because they will loose the development funds
@Xnain: You are from PTI aren't you? On this issue, Imran is saying the same thing that MQM is, why the hate then? BTW, I am an Indian and do not belong to either party.
Because Punjab is not ready yet!
@Xnain: Those who understand, know that city administration is the third tier and bedrock of government and democracy. When power is devolved, people are better served.
@Aysha M: I can understand the desperation. The "nali, guttar, gali build" party is desperate for some funds since bhatta targets have not been met for ramzan.
The recent resignation of CEC Fakhruddin Ebrahim has cast a shadow of doubt on the integrity of the four remaining EC members in peoples' eyes. They need to resign to restore people's trust in ECs integrity and transparency. Without people's trust in EC elections do not carry the validity they should. For EC not to object expediting the date for Presidential Elections from August 6, and now refusing to follow Supreme Courts directive demonstrate highly disturbing nuances. For a person like Fakhruddin Ebrahim with impeccable credentials not being able to work with CEC members is reason enough for them to consider leaving and giving the mantle to members who may have the people's trust.
Send a contempt of court notice to ECP too now
No problems, its suits Shareefs.
And let the appointed bureaucrats with tenured position and no stakes or interest in the masses drown the metropolis. Great work ECP
