Grenade wielding gunmen battled Pakistani security forces during a sophisticated midnight attack on a major prison holding hundreds of Taliban and other militants, the police said on Monday.
Fighting continued into the early hours of Tuesday and security forces said they had imposed a curfew on Dera Ismail Khan.
Up to 40 gunmen wearing police uniforms launched their attack by blowing up the electricity line to the prison and detonating heavy explosions that breached the outer walls, said provincial prisons chief Khalid Abbas.
“It’s completely dark in there. We don’t know what’s going on but there is fighting,” he said.
The militants fought their way inside using rocket propelled grenades and machineguns, district police chief Sohail Khalid said.
DI Khan Commissioner Mushtaq Jadoon said dozens of prisoners had escaped. “The Taliban have loudspeakers and they are calling the names of their friends,” he said.
The gunmen also took over a nearby house and hospital, holding the residents hostage as they fired on the police from the rooftops and laid ambushes for reinforcements.
Constable Gul Mohammed said he was rushing to the scene when he was challenged by two young boys holding rifles.
“They told me to stop. I told them I am a policeman, and that’s when they opened fire,” he said. Mohammed was shot three times. Police said there were other small groups of gunmen in the streets leading to the prison.
The number of casualties was unclear because the fighting was ongoing. Police said they had called for military reinforcements.
The prison houses around 5,000 prisoners. Around 250 of them are Pakistani Taliban and members of banned sectarian groups such as Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ).
Last week, militants stormed the headquarters of the Pakistani military intelligence service in the southern town of Sukkur. Over the weekend, around 40 people were killed in twin bombings in the town of Parachinar.
Pakistani militants have launched successful raids on prisons several times before. Last year, nearly 400 prisoners were freed when the Taliban attacked a prison in the northern town of Bannu.
After that attack, militants told Reuters they were helped by insiders in the security services.
An inquiry later found there were far fewer guards on duty than there should have been and those who were there lacked sufficient ammunition.
The attack comes the day before Pakistan’s lawmakers are due to choose a president and two days before a major Shia festival, which security officials have warned could be attacked.

Well a very horrible time in my beloved city. I could clearly hear rockets, firing, suicide bomber's blasts last night. It was firing continuously for about an hour and i heard MORE THAN 50 blasts!!! My question is if there were prisoners with such a high profile and the militants had already threatened security forces about this attack than why they had not increased security in the area ??? they should send prisoners to any unknown place. And WOW there were far fewer gaurds on duty that there should have been.About 150 militants came, called the names of their friends and took 250 prisoners along with them and there was not only a single check post to stop them.
Karzai seems to have better control of Afganistan than Pakistan seems to have over Waziristan, NWFP and Baluchistan.
And, Pakistan feels confident that its nuclear assets are well protected and out of the reach of the Taliban.
Many have been warning that the Taliban has supporters at all levels within the government and security services as was clearly evident during the Bannu jail break. Now we have another one. Shudder to think about the loyalties of those guarding the Nuclear assets, cannot be too different. The train seems to be hurtling towards disaster at break neck speed.
This is ridiculously shocking. Why would you keep a jail with such a high-profile prisoners on such a mediocre level of security? Since apparently no militant got killed, I would not be surprised if this time militants have been again successful in freeing the prisoners.
I am unable to understand that why Government of KPK under the patronage of Imran Khan has not initiated dialogues with these peace loving people who came to take their companions/voters of PTI & JI from jail.
The number of terrorist attacks have increased four-fold in KPK ever since the Taliban apologist government of PTI has come into power on 31 May 2013. Adding fuel to fire, the Taliban Khan has been dragging his feet from any Peace Conference. His Information Minister Shaukat Yousafzai has already belittled the terrorist strikes. These opportunists only want to make funny statements for their trolls on social media. But have miserably failed to restore peace in the province.
KP chief minister and other responsible should resign. what a shame. Instead of hanging these killers, they let them flee. shame, really shame.
Here is the Change !
Naya KPK :)
The last time there was a attack on Bannu Jail, I suggested immediate execution of high profile militant prisoners on the first signs of attack on jail. This would eliminate all future attacks. Given the judicial state the prisoners are not going to be convicted anyway, so why risk their death by trying to free them?
Army Army where are you? It's high time to attack North Waziristan. Don't do it for America. Do it for the peace loving Pakistanis. Do it to bring back the confidence in people like me. Other wise the only option for me will be to go for immigration. I am sure many people are thinking on the same lines. With a large chunk of the budget going towards defense, at-least we can expect a secure environment, if not electricity and water. Please don't waste more time and ignore the Taliban apologists who confuse people.
Reaction of drone strikes, must negotiate with them, naya pakistan etc etc.....
Well planed attack. God bless pakistan.
All the more reason not to capture these animals alive.
Who is behind this Attack? Must be some foreign hand.
It is clear that drones are to blame.
This is not first successful coordinated attack by the Talibans to free their comrades. Our security agencies have become extremely weak to resist the Talibans. I am afraid of a day when we may hear that the Talibans have taken over the President house and GHQ.
A very disappointed citizen of Pakistan!
Taliban calling names of there friends ? WTH ? There is a thing called helicopter ? Excuse me ? Morons ! Go after them ! And you're letting your own men be sitting ducks in there, send back up! LOSERS!
