The Rangers have been accused of killing a man for not stopping his car in Gulistan-e-Jauhar on Tuesday, less than two months after the paramilitary force killed another man for the same reason.
As the residents were rushing home to break their fast, four Rangers personnel gestured at a black-and-yellow taxi to stop while they were manning a thoroughfare in Gulistan-e-Jauhar. When the driver, 36-year-old Mureed, failed to stop, one of the Rangers personnel - Ghulam Rasul - allegedly opened fire from the front and shot him multiple times.
Mureed died shortly afterwards in front of his minor son. His body was taken to Jinnah hospital for an autopsy and was then handed over to the family. “The victim was dead when he was brought to the hospital,” said the medico-legal officer at Jinnah hospital. “He was shot four times in his chest and that caused his death.”
A resident of Chishti Nagar, Block 10 in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Mureed had left home with his four-year-old son to buy fruits and other groceries for iftar, according to the family. “The Rangers men on motorcycles signalled the taxi to stop,” claimed a witness. “The driver stopped and started reversing towards the Rangers who opened fire at him.”
Mureed’s son remained safe in the firing but he was unable to speak after witnessing the shooting. The family fears he may be suffering from severe trauma.
A similar incident had occurred on June 4, when a Rangers solider shot and killed 22-year-old Ghulam Haider in Shah Faisal Colony for not stopping his car. The newly wed man was driving his cousin to the hospital for a dialysis when he was shot. As a result, the paramilitary solider was arrested and is currently facing trial.
Protest
Following the incident, several people gathered around Gulistan-e-Jauhar police station, shouting slogans against the Rangers. As victim lived in the same area, his wife also joined the protesters at the police station after she received the news about her husband’s killing. “They [Rangers] could have burst the tyres, if they were suspicious of him,” she said, amid tears. “They do not have a right to kill anyone in this manner.”
Law enforcement
The Rangers soldier responsible for the incident initially told the police that he opened fire when the driver tried to escape even though he signalled him to stop the vehicle. Ghulam Rasul insisted that Mureed was a robber and he opened fire to prevent the kidnapping of a minor boy. Several senior Rangers officials reached the site to calm down the protesters.
Meanwhile, the police declared that Mureed was not kidnapping anyone. He had no criminal records and was a taxi driver by profession, said the police chief for district East, DIG Tahir Naveed. “Ghulam Rasul has been arrested for the murder of a resident,” he said, adding that he will not be given any relief and will be dealt according to the law. The police have registered an FIR No. 413/13.
The Rangers director general, Major General Rizwan Akhtar, taking the notice of the incident suspended the four Rangers personnel. “We have detained all four Rangers personnel,” the Rangers spokesperson told The Express Tribune. “The FIR of the case will be registered after initial inquiry into the incident.” According to DIG Naveed, a case was registered against the Rangers personnel on behalf of the victim’s wife. “There is no space for errors on the part of the law enforcers, especially while they are on duty.”

Rangers never found a terrorist fleeing, never dare to fight liyari gangsters and protection of so-called liberal PPP jiyalas, Bata Khoors of Nine-Zero-90, whose puppet leader always shed crocodile tears and an expert artist, never dare to halt feudal/ wadeira kids carrying weapons as a sign of prestige, power thieves in industrial sector........only poor bread earners get caught in between..
It's not the first time Sindh Rangers has killed any innocent.
Only option left for Karachi is an Army Operation.
If they really have GUTS ...Go and shot gangsters in Layari!!!!
when we ask our protectors to give us protection, they do their best, it is just that we don't cooperate. If the ranger asked the Taxi driver to stop, he should have stopped, it for his own good and for our own good. If we don't stop for them to check, and don't cooperate, then we have no right to run around crying that our rangers aren't doing their job and violence is spreading in Karachi.
I probably haven't heard a sadder, more tragic story than this! And a lot of sad, violent incidents happen daily in Pakistan but to kill a man in front of his 4 year old son when they had just gone to get groceries for Ramadan, all for absolutely nothing!
To those saying either you stop or get killed? Are these armed forces personnel so poorly trained to not even realize (from a close distance) who is going to blow up and who appears not to. What good is their training if they can't even tell that much! (I know its easier to comment but this has to be part of their training and if they are not doing it right than they need to be held accountable) The end result, we keep seeing people get killed for absolutely nothing, time and again, our lives even more insignificant than the animals we slaughter for our consumption.
Brave woman to have come out to protest for her husband's death, can't imagine what she must be going through. May Allah keep us safe from all these untoward incidents.
Media condemns Law Enforcers if they act & also condemn them when they don't act. If the Rangers asked the Taxi to stop at a check-point, he should have stopped. His death should be treated as a suicide, NOT murder!
@Kamran Paracha: What if it was you and you didn't hear or see them calling?
Why did the guy not stop. He could have been a suicide bomber? We cant take chances like that. He made a mistake and paid. Case closed. Now free the rangers so they can improve law and order in karachi
Sad, but the taxi driver should have stopped. Suicide bombers often do this, drive to crowded places and blow themselves
where were their disciplines, they should hav shot a warning shot, such a dumb people... they really need some education nd training in this regards. feels really srry for the poor taxi driver, may god bless his soul with peace... these kind of acts are not good fr karachi nd so is fr pakistan as a nation
Never do I hear a ranger shot dead a criminal..
i can't even imagine what that kid has been through :-/
@ModiFied: if the car explodes...dont you think the blown up tires wont help...i dont want to take side of the rangers but I think they have a pretty difficult job...!!!
@Kala Khan:
well said..but in either case I its sad...
Karachi has been a hunting ground for 30 years. These sharp shooters are just making sure that their skills are not getting rusty.
@Khan Rangers are here because Police are incapable to their job. Both are not trained.
this happens when rangers are told to do police job. rangers are not trained for this.. its job of police
Which Anchor will raise voice against Unfair Killings by Rangers in Karachi ??? Get Out Rangers
There is something in every car and we call that tires. Couldn't these rangers shoot at the tires and disable the car from moving ?
Rangers of Karachi are ever so quick to beat up or in this instance kill for those who disobey them yet thousands of Karachites actually see them sitting back in their vehicle and speed off as the notorious double sawari bikers approach you for making the request that is all too fimiliar to us.
I remember making eye contact with a ranger standing not too far away as I rummaged my pockets and handed over my cell phone to the mugger while the the rangers responsible for my protection hurriedly shuffled into their vehicle and left so the mugger can rob me in peace and without fear.
About time the government of Sindh ask them to leave our city, they are anything but help and waste of tax payers money!
Karachites are expendable, may it be at the hands of LEA or TTP, They should now consider drones for more effective outcomes
Grow up you all at ET. Its ORDERS, they get them from high-ups which is to stop people and if they dont stop than its OK for them to shoot. Or else you would have been putting up this story as Rangers killed in Suicide attack on a picket when they failed to stop a car.
Very sad incident....Rangers have a very tough job too. Its very hard to judge intention and purpose of an approaching vehicle.
What is going to happen to this country, especially this city Karachi only God knows. It looks like the law enforcers have now turned into real killers. One thing is sure, nothing is going to happen to the culprit. So it be said, so it be written.
Incident speaks volumes about highhandedness of Rangers....
