Reforms: IT minister advises revision of telecom policy

The board discussed the annual budget of the fund for the year 2013-14.

Minister of State for Information Technology (IT) Anusha Rahman on Tuesday emphasised that the existing telecom policy needs to be revised.


Chairing the 27th Board meeting of National ICT Research and Development Fund, an organisation of the ministry, she said the review of the policy has been pending for a few years, tasking the fund to facilitate in preparing recommendations for the policy before the upcoming 3G spectrum auction.

The board discussed the annual budget of the fund for the year 2013-14, reviewed the progress of on-going projects and directed the closure of those that have not shown any progress in view of monitoring committee of the fund.

The minister directed that fund to spend on targeted centres of excellence, especially for broadband access technologies and next generation networks.
