Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Sunday asked a prominent Chinese company to provide suggestions and provide assistance towards curbing power line losses, theft and pilferage in Pakistan.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) disclosed on June 12, that electricity worth Rs40 billion is stolen every year because of prevalent malpractices in power distribution companies.

Since the current management took over line losses have been reduced from 40% to 28%. KESC has now started removing PMT's from areas where losses are very high due to theft and defaulters, given that the consumers haven't paid up after repeated notifications. KESC's commitment to improving the power supply is as such that we've invested $1 Billion since 2008 and added 1010 MWs of generation to Karachi.

A honest solution to electricity theft is "pre-paid electric meters" instead of post paid ones. Many countries have this system and can revolutionise power sector in Pakistan.
Kesc should register all it's employees' mobile numbers compulsorily and note down their areas of residence from it's own record. Then kesc should monitor sms to see if it's own employees are reporting thefts. If no sms for a month from ANY employee the kesc will know WHO IS PART OF THE PROBLEM.
It should talk to CPLC, Sindh high court, Top rangers officials to find out what should be next step. Without next step strategy it can continue to beat around the bush.
