PESHAWAR:

Corruption is the root cause of weak governance and impending deterioration of the economy, said Colonel (Retd) Khursheed Alam, the former director general of the National Accountability Bureau in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

He was speaking as the chief guest at a one-day seminar held at the University of Engineering and Technology Peshawar on Monday.  The topic of discussion at the event organised by Development, Environment, Legal Aid, Technical Support and Advocacy Association (Delta) was countering corruption and increasing transparency and accountability.

Alam spoke in detail about white-collar crimes and corruption across Pakistan and effective countermeasures which can be used against them.

Delta President Naazlee Sardar briefed participants about various mechanisms the government could use for effective reporting of corruption. It could also raise standards of community services such as libraries to help create awareness against the problem, she said.

The event was attended by lawyers, media persons and eminent members of the civil society.
