Peace pipeline back on track

TEHRAN: Tehran is to start the design and construction of the remaining part of the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline on Iranian soil in early May.

The Head of the National Iranian Gas Export Company said a consultant would be chosen in the near future for the remaining part of the pipeline, also known as the 'Peace Pipeline'.

The official said Iran hopes the design will be completed before March 2011 with construction to begin right after. Iran plans to deliver the gas to Pakistan by 2014 with only 250 kilometers of the pipeline to be constructed in Iranian territory.
Iran says Russian and Chinese firms have shown interest in constructing the Pakistani part of the pipeline. A gas sales contract between Iran and Pakistan was signed last June by the presidents of the two countries.
