Hydropower: Punjab govt begins work on five projects

The Punjab government has earmarked Rs75 million for the project in the 2013-14 budget.

MULTAN: The Punjab government has awarded design work to different companies for five hydel projects to overcome the energy crisis, according to media reports on Wednesday.

The Punjab Power Development Company has started work on five low-head hydel power projects: the 7.64 megawatt (MW) Marala in Sialkot, 5.38MW Chian Wali in Gujranwala, 4.04MW Deg Out Fall in Sheikhupura, 2.82MW in Pakpatan, and 4.16MW in Okara.

Collectively, the power plants will add close to 25MW of electricity to the national grid.

Another project with a capacity of 120MW will also be built at Taunsa Barrage to reduce load-shedding.

The Punjab government has earmarked Rs75 million for the project in the 2013-14 budget.
