NEPRA increases power tariff by 2%

Nepra increases power tariff as power shortage continues throughout the country.

LAHORE: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority has increased the power tariff by two per cent countrywide.

According to the notification, eight power distribution companies and the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) have been notified and the new rates will be effective from today. The Water and Power Ministry said the industrial sector of the country is currently working with regular power supply.

Previously, power tariffs were revised after public hearings conducted by Nepra throughout the country. However, the revision for the last quarter of this year was made without public hearings because of an improvement of 2000 megawatt in the national grid.

Speaking to the media in Islamabad, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said the two per cent increase in power tariff is to fill the deficit in the power industry.

Power shortfall continues

Pakistan is once again facing a power crisis as loadshedding has increased to up to 14 hours in many parts of the country. Power shortfall currently stands at 4,387 megawatts. Pepco sources said power is being generated at a diminshed capacity due to a reduction in gas and oil supply. Thermal power generation has decreased from 4,500 megawatts to a mere 1,744 megawatts.

The opposition also staged a walk out from the Senate today (Friday) to protest against unscheduled loadshedding.
