LAHORE:

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has announced its candidates for four National Assembly and nine Punjab Assembly by-elections and urged the Election Commission to hold free, fair and transparent polls.

Ejaz Chaudhry, PTI’s Punjab president, announced the following candidates at a press conference here on Tuesday: Nazir Sobhi for NA-68, Ayla Malik for NA-71, Faizullah Kamoka for NA-83, Chaudhry Mansha Sindhu for NA-129, Wasiq Kayyum Abbas for PP-6, Ajmal Cheema for PP-51, Mehar Wajid Azeem for PP-150, Chaudhry Khalid Mehmood Gujjar for PP-161, Saad Khursheed Khanju for PP-201, Chaudhry Maqsood for PP-217, Sardar Ahmed Ali Dareshak for PP-243, Abdul Hai Dasti for PP-254 and Dr Ziaullah Jatoi for PP-289.

The candidates for another National Assembly and three provincial assembly seats will be announced in two days pending the approval of the central executive committee, Chaudhry said.

He said that special arrangements should be made for local elections and all candidates should be consulted on the polling scheme.

The army should not play the role of a silent spectator during the by-polls as there was massive rigging in the general elections, Chaudhry said.

Performance review

In a review of the federal and Punjab governments’ 50 days or so in power so far, Chaudhry said the PML-N had not introduced a single policy to improve the life of the common man. In fact, their decisions had paralysed the economy and promoted inflation. The government and electricity distribution companies were robbing citizens who paid their utility bills regularly through the fuel adjustment surcharge.

Chaudhry said the government should allow owners of power looms in Faisalabad to pay their bills in instalments instead of sending their cases to the National Accountability Bureau.

The PTI would support the shutter-down strike called by the loom owners on Wednesday (today), he added.

He said that the PTI condemned atrocities committed against the Hazaras in Balochistan and demanded that the government and agencies take special measures to protect the community.
