PESHAWAR:

Minister for Local Government and Rural Development Inayatullah Khan said the government will introduce a new local government system which incorporates positive points from previous acts.

Addressing the Peshawar Press Club’s weekly guest hour programme, Khan said the provincial government had constituted working committees that are expected to complete their groundwork by July 25. “Holding the local body elections is one of our top priorities. We want the power to be transferred to ground level so there is better use of facilities,” said Khan, adding all hitches they are facing to make this work will soon be overcome.

Khan added they will soon start a mega project for the beautification of the city for which Rs50 million worth of machinery will be dispatched for waste disposal and other cleanliness schemes. The minister also promised to set up a water and sanitation company to deal with the crises of contaminated drinking water. “This will be an independent company with no government influence,” he added.

Khan further said the projects were given on merit which saved the province around 50% of the funds. “Peshawar has always been ignored by previous governments, but we will bring back its original glory.”

The minister also said permanent committees have been constituted for the removal of encroachments in the city.
