RAWALPINDI:

The family of Abdullah, a suspect in the murder of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Public Prosecutor Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali, said on Monday that they would be filing a petition at a Rawalpindi court requesting that he be shifted to a hospital on the grounds that Adiala Jail lacked adequate medical facilities to treat him.

Family sources told The Express Tribune that the jail’s medical staff lacked adequate facilities to treat Abdullah, who is in critical condition.

Abdullah said his parents were concerned about his deteriorating health, adding that he would appeal to the court to order the police to shift him to a hospital where he would be given better treatment.

The police had shifted him to Adiala Jail a few days ago after obtaining his judicial remand.

A police official close to the investigation said that keeping him at a hospital may put other patients at risk as there were fears that his accomplices may try and free him.

However, doctors advised the police to transfer Abdullah to a hospital owing to his poor health.

“Doctors have expressed their concern over the lack of facilities at the jail’s hospital, which is why we are taking utmost care,” said a doctor at the jail requesting anonymity.

However, when contacted, Adiala Jail’s medical in-charge Dr Shehzad said that Abdullah was in a stable condition and was being regularly visited by a medical team.

Abdullah’s parents could not be reached for comment despite repeated attempts to reach them while Deputy Inspector General Security Tahir Alam Khan, who is heading the investigation, was also unreachable.
