The deceased, Nadeem, affiliated with the Pakistan Peoples Party and a trustee of Madinatul Ilm Imambargah in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, was shot dead by armed men on Monday evening in Gulshan-e-Iqbal when he was sitting at his poultry shop.
His funeral procession was passing along Super Highway for burial at the Wadi-e-Hussain graveyard located on main Super Highway when unidentified persons, from among the participants of the procession, resorted to indiscriminate firing. In retaliation, a crowd of people belonging to the Pashtun community also returned fire at them.
Police officials said that during the exchange of fire, a young man identified as Asif, a resident of Gizri area, was shot dead while two others, Ismail and Sadiq, were wounded. Sohrab Goth SHO Naeem Khan, while talking to The Express Tribune, said that the victims were standing near New Sabzi Mandi when the incident occurred. Following the killing, situation turned more violent as people from the Pashtun community thronged the Super Highway to stage a protest against the incident.

The protesters torched tyres on the main road and damaged several passing vehicles by pelting stones on them causing the closure of vehicular traffic on Super highway for hours. The funeral procession, however, had already reached the graveyard before the crowd of rival group members came onto the roads.
SHO Khan also claimed to have apprehended over half dozen suspects who were allegedly behind the violence. Extra contingent of law enforcers also reached the site and dispersed the protesters by assuring them of full cooperation after which Super Highway was reopened for vehicular traffic. No case was registered till the filing of this report.
