A Chinese company HydroChina International Engineering Company is planning to set up a 50-megawatt (MW) wind farm in Gharo, 60 kilometres east of Karachi, according to the company’s vice president Wang Youngqiang.
He said that the cost of the project had been estimated at $120 million. Youngqiang who is on a visit to Pakistan said that the project had been initiated by HydroChina Dawood Power –a jointly-operated company.
Youngqiang said the project will kick-off operations by June 2015 as closure of financials were expected to be finalised by either end of this year or July 2014. The wind power project will also provide employment to locals residing in the area.
HydroChina International Engineering Company also planned to establish nine more wind farms of 50MW each in the future as Pakistan’s wind corridor held good prospects for alternative energy generation.
“We look forward to more business to invest especially in the local power sector,” Youngqiang added. The vice chairman of the Chinese-based company was of the view that there was a potential of generating up to 50,000MW through wind in the country.
He also appreciated the newly-elected government’s focus on resolving the energy crisis and the circular debt alongside coming up with the new energy policy.
HydroChina Engineering Company Investment Manager Jiang Li and HydroChina Dawood Power Chief Financial Officer Muhammad Saleem Munshi were also present on the occasion.

@Dara Shaikh:
pakistan has had an alternative energy development board since 2004 and the government then had initiated several projects which the PPP government got rid of when it came. so NS isnt doing anything that revolutionary.
We have been listening for wind power projects since decades and it always installed on paper.
That is the tragic story of pakistan energy sectors.We would believe only when we see the projects going on air and give the power to the poor habit ants and the project not go to the wind.
U guys 100 MW plant was first setup by the PPP governemnt. 50 MW is already operation while the rest is under testing phases in Sindh
I think we should invest in acquiring the technology and make China train our people out here how to use it! Everyone just seems to be minting money from our country
Alternate sources of power such as wind and solar energy set ups are though expensive but they go all the way long in not only facilitating the masses but also recovering its own price in a very small time as they are quite inexpensive to maintain and service.
Ler Samand Mubarak who is dodging the people take help from China for coal fired power project. China is also number one solar energy parts manufacturing. To begin with we can have street lihtd on solar energy
Thank God we have woken up to alternate energy. It's about time and its free, barring the initial set up and maintenance. Hurry up and give all assistance, in this case to the Chinese.
120 million $ for just 50 megawatt. Thats expensive.
Thanks to Chinese. May I ask what Government is doing in this regard?
How good would it have been if PM had addressed the nation and told his governments plan to tackle loadshedding.
