LAHORE: Police arrested former parliamentarian Syed Salman Mohsin Gilani after a court in Lahore sentenced him for contesting 2008 elections on a fake degree, Express News reported on Monday.
Gilani belongs to Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N)
The court awarded him a one-year-long jail term and ordered him to pay a fine worth Rs30,000.
In August 2012, a case was registered against Gilani for contesting elections on a fake degree after the Election Commission sent his documents for verification and found them to be bogus.
On April 19, 2013, the Lahore High Court granted protective bail to Gilani till April 26.
Gilani contested the general election in 2008 from the NA-165 constituency of Pakpattan.

I agree with you, we don't need competent, qualified and educated people running this country. let me take your thinking forward, We don't need Doctors who are educated at Agha Khan or King Edward, I think the tailor or butcher can do that job, I don't think we need Engineers educated from NED to build bridges, tunnels and roads ... I think the local pot maker can do that job.....THE PROBLEM WITH PAKISTAN IS THAT PEOPLE WHO ARE STUPID, UNEDUCATED, & IGNORANT FEEL NO SHAME, OR DON"T FEEL THEY NEED TO IMPROVE, RATHER THEY ARE PROUD OF BEING IGNORANT AND UNEDUCATED The sooner we get rid of this mentality only then can we make progress.

No doubt MQM had no member with fake degree but what about numerous MPAs and MNAs in the previous assembly with Dual Nationality (Nadia Gabol, Raza Haroon, Muhammad Ali Shah etc)? http://tribune.com.pk/story/474086/dual-nationals-3-mqm-lawmakers-reappointed-to-sindh-government/ Submitting a false undertaking under article63 is also corruption. Isn't it?
@saba: It does not matter much if politicians do not possess high education. One can learn a lot from other informal sources. Fake degree is forgery and the peoples representatives are not supposed to be criminals.
@Riaz Ahmad: MQM is the only political party in Pakistan whose members were not found in corruption of any form including academic degrees. Due to their liberal outlook, they have resistance from religious and feudal parties. They are target of terrorists groups also.
That's why PMLN didn't award him ticket for 2013 general elections.

@ishrat salim: Dastis case was different. His degree was not fake, degree awarding school was questioned and was clarified.
What about such other cases ? Dasti to name one ?n many others in same position ? why were they allowed to contest election anew in first place ?

Only the Aducated University Degree Holders are allowed to be the members of NA. What kind of Democracy is in Pakistan where majorty of uneducted citizens are kept out of the running of the state?
