“As they went down, they lost consciousness and couldn’t be retrieved": police.

RAWALPINDI:

Three persons suffocated in Chuontra on Saturday after they got trapped while going down a well in an attempt to fix it.

A police official said the deceased were identified as Kabir, Junaid and Nadeem. He said they went inside the well in Chayhan village to clear it for use, adding that the likely cause of death was poisonous gas in the well.

“As they went down, they lost consciousness and couldn’t be retrieved by the people present nearby. Locals called the police and rescue workers after some time, but it was too late.”

Rescuers and police had not recovered the bodies when this report was filed.

The official, quoting locals, said the well was old and people had not used it for several years. “Due to the water shortage, the deceased wanted to clear the well so it could serve as an additional water source for the area,” the official said.
