A sketch identifying the alleged culprit has been prepared, Express News reported.
Raids are expected to be carried out across the city.
According to initial details, unidentified armed men opened fire at Qureshi's car when he was returning home after Friday prayers along with his son.
The MPA’s body and his injured son were shifted to a nearby hospital. The son - who was brought to the hospice in a critical condition - succumbed to his injuries.
Business activities came to a standstill in the area after the killings.
MQM leader Abdul Rashid appealed to the concerned authorities to take action against the killer.
Qureshi was a member of the Sindh Assembly and was elected from PS-103.
MQM has announced three days of mourning against the killings.
The result of the recently-conducted referendum, asking party supporters to vote for or against MQM joining the Sindh government, was also delayed.
Meanwhile, the party leadership - that had gathered at the MQM headquarters Nine Zero for the result-related press conference - were directed to move to the slain lawmaker’s residence.
Another leader of a religious party was also shot dead in Mobina Town.
MQM MNAs walk of NA session
National assembly members of the Mutahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM) boycotted lower house proceedings on Friday to register their protest against the killing of Sindh MPA Sajid Qureshi.
On a point of order, MQM MNA Rasheed Gudail said that workers of MQM were being killed in Karachi but nobody was taking notice of these killings. He said the Home Ministery in Sindh was approached over the matter but no action had been taken, adding that people who gave great sacrifice for the creation of Pakistan were being killed.

Waqas was such a nice person.. May he rest in peace.. Fatiha!
"Territorial changes...." Ifyou mean separation of Karachi, forget it.
@modi:
"u forgot BLA as well which is Indian sponsored "
I didn't forget, I purposefully missed it. Because BLA (whether sponsored by India or not) is fighting for a legitimate cause against the occupying forces of Pakistan.
@Enrique: @Baffled: You are right, but when MPs sacrificing their lives for the people of Karachi, commenting is just my two cents,
I think I will keep going
@Water Bottle: u forgot BLA as well which is Indian sponsored
Im more saddened by the comments above than the killing.. hatred of people against Urdu speaking community is... its a shame not to condemn this. very sad. we dont deserve to be na nation. Pakistan ka Allah Hafiz
I don't care who dies. I just want to make enough money to feed my family. Being forced to observe a strike is just wrong. I cannot afford to have principles when I cannot afford to feed my family. It's sad this man and his son were killed. But I do not care enough to protest about it. All life is precious. Not just MQM. The hypocrisy is mind mindboggling. If you want your family to stay hungry because you believe in something, you are a bad parent!
@Randomstranger: Try and make those “territorial changes”. We won’t make the same mistakes that we made in 1971.
Who is "we" ? What happened in 1971 ? What mistakes did you make ? So instead of "same mistakes", are you ready for making different kind of mistakes this time ? I hope the "different mistakes" are more effective than the "same mistakes"@np:
"Minor correction. Punjabi Sunni males."
LOL. Yes. Punjabi Sunni males. Correction accepted.
@Morons: You over-reacted this was not a case of religious policing? What kind of policing are you doing anyway?
@Water Bottle They had turned their back on reality long ago. Their situation is so ugly that they'd rather lose themselves in dreams of supremacy over their fellow humans. They dont like you disturbing them.
@Water Bottle: "So the only people who can claim to be safe in Pakistan are Punjabi Sunnis."
Minor correction. Punjabi Sunni males.
A sketch identifying the alleged culprit has been prepared, Express News reported. Hahaha this is so funny cannot stop laughing!!!
@Peace Seeker: To correct you, prayer is effective by only the purity and intensity of intent and God alone is the ultimate decider of intentions. Words are a mere way to channel out these intentions. So lets start discouraging religious policing and start promoting peace.
@Modi:
I never claimed to be a Pakistani. I don't have to. As far as 'pessimism' is concerned, if I am spreading pessimism, then I wonder what is TTP, LET, LEJ, JEM, SSP, DePC doing?
MQM is secular and losing lawmakers. PTI is pro Talibans sort of religious, sort of liberal party and still losing lawmakers. What a predicament.
im sad, govt should take serious action against the evil parties
@Morons: Correct prayers are more effective. Take it easy, and relax.
@Morons: @Water Bottle: Thanks. You are both right. Lut was a resident of Sodom and relative of Noah. And like them all residents of Sodom are Sodomites. I consider myself a descendant of Lut and hence a Sodomite. But all these freaks from SA acting as religious shurta's really get me. Why do they access the internet is beyond me. They should get their kicks from TV instead of acting like a little boy and whining. .
@Water Bottle: and you are an Indian trying to spread pessimism as always!
ultimately the bomb, the punjabi anchors ,punjabi judiciary, defence housing will be left in the holy land of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi...
@Funny - you sound funny when you play that victim card defending MQM.
The loss of lives was unfortunate , may Allah bless the deceased souls. MQM needs to put their act together in constructive way versus taking to streets half of each month. They have been in power for 14 years and if they could not play their role in clearing it up they cant complain. The land mafia activity quadrupled since MQM ventured into land mafia. CIP - Babar Ghauri or Saima group or the new construction between Nagan to 5 Star most influential people got hold of the new construction.
@Shan Say: Are your for real?? You seem to have lost grip of something... Please stop acting the religious police. The commenter is sending prayers which is all that matters.
Tide of voilence has reversed on MQM. There were times when MQM would be operating ruthlessly in Karachi. Time is no ones friend. It ticks and changes every thing for you.
@Aftab Kenneth Wilson: Because as General Musharraf raised his fist in Islamabad Julsa and said see, who was incharge in Karachi, that statement was said in regard to the mayhem in Karachi on May12,2007.
@Shan Say:
"Sodomite: I very much like and have enjoyed your comments, but please use a different pseudonym. Thanks. "
Just so you know, Sodom is a real Biblical town. The residents of this town are called Sodomite.
Well PTI want to tallk to those who are killing in KP so you should as IK what about those in Hangu@Fahad Siddiqui:
ET: Please be careful with your moderation. However, once you post a comment, do not remove it. If you do, it shall reflect poor moderation standards on your part.
@Aysha M (original version): "Innalilahay wa ina allahay rajay oon" Correct it. It should not be "allahay" but "elaihee."
ET: Sodomite may refer to:
A person who practices sodomy A resident of Sodom A male temple prostitute See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodomite
Please do not allow such pseudonyms, as ET is a family paper. Thanks.
@Sodomite: I very much like and have enjoyed your comments, but please use a different pseudonym. Thanks.
@Aysha M (original version): "Bloodshed like this is followed by territorial changes, before it gets to that point, Sindh government should show some seriousness to restore peace." The situation is beyond the control of the Sindh Government! Why don't you ask for an Army operation against those causing bloodshed in Karachi and elsewhere? What territorial changes are you referring to?
@Aysha M (original version): Cause in other parties, members can quit easily. In MQM, there is only one way out.
ET: As usual you are giving more space to pro-MQM comments!
Just like someone was asking for Qadri to be freed.... +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Someone will ask for rose petals for the murderers of these father and son. Today's Pakistan.
so many innocent peoples gonna die after this incident Karachi ka khuda hi hafiz.
Where is Minister Vasan who could dream ahead of bad things to happen? Get him back for he could see into the future and be used to forecast attacks around the corner, We could nab all Na Maloom Afraad then before they did anything, Like Tom Cruise's Movie "Minority Report". Vasan is the only answer for karachitities.
Very unfortunate and sad news which should be dealt with iron fist and hands. Many came out on the streets violently threatening people to close down their business and as such the city came to shutdown with an hours time. Call to close down all activities will not bring back the deceased but will create more miseries for this mega city. I hope forceful closers tech tics will only destroy our already destroyed economy. People who have killed both father and son should be traced and brought to justice but why punish rest of the population?
Its very saddening. My heartfelt condolences for Late Sajid qureshi and his son. What a loss. But where are the law enforcing agencies? In any other country, such brutal killings on the streets of the city are never brushed under the carpet. I do not support the MQM, but my heart goes out to all the urdu-speaking people. Just heard on the news, that one of the attackers was wearing a beard. Why could the police not take rapid action, set up snap checking. But when the police are demoralized, such incidents will keep happening and the neros in the govt will keep playing their fiddle.
Karachitities must bravely face Na Maloom Afraad in the streets, in the homes, in the schools, in the hoospotals, in the fields, in the mosques, in everywhere and drive them away into the sea.
@Randomstranger: This mindset will do more harm than good. A level of seriousness and commitment is required to restore peace, before it all spirals out of control
Wow peace lover I never thought of this may be opertion clean up , coming up
@Modi: Completely unsubstantiated MQM seems to be a favorite foe, nevertheless a favorite
We must condemn but dont condone..lets crack down on these hands.
The genocide of the Muhajirs are in the offing . Ayesha M , no point talking sense to the biased to the cores . They will vanquish you either way , and yes without even sprinkling salt and pepper I strongly differ to your approach . Some people and the Wadera Govt just understand just the "another " specific language .
May be the time is not very far away to sing the lullaby in that language .
@vasan: Anti-terrorist operations should begin from Karachi.
Mourn, yes. But please do not bring the city to a standstill. Have some mercy on daily wage earners or provide them with a stipend, please!
Inna lilahi wainna ilahi rajeon We are full of hatred against MQM that even if they lose and MNA or MPA we blame them. If any person dies in karachi we blame them. If some thing bad happens we blame them. while growing up i heard "taali dono hathu say bachti hai" .... why cant we accept the fact that its not just MQM but all other parties involved in this crime ? why cant we accept that MQM can be a victim also and they can be right when they say taliban are coming in karachi and land mafia is helping them. Lets judge each story by its context and dont jump to conclusion and lets consider everyone innocent unless proven otherwise
Was Sajid Qureshi anyway suspected to provide evidence in the murder case of Imran Farooq?
There is pure anarchy in Pakistan. Look at the headlines today, yesterday, the day before and before and before. Blasts, IED blasts, suicide blasts, MPA's killing, MPA asking for Quadri's release, pro-govt militias' killings, sectarian killings etc etc. The govt needs to put its foot down and deweaponize first, get the TTP shot and then attend to education reforms. Dont give a damn about what is happening outside, Attend to the wounds inside.
Yesterday i met this person on some issue.. I was sitting right before him. Today he is no more. I dont believe it. This is what life is all about. You never know what's next....
@Aysha M (original version): @Kashif:
Unfortunately yes! cause I speak on reality considering there history and in case of MQM its always ugly.
Punjab base terrorist groups are in full action in karachi.
Neros (Rulers) fiddle while Rome (Pakistan) burns ! Oh Pakistan, Karachi Bleeds Again ! Hum Khoon Ki Qistain Tow Bohat De Chukay Lakin Aey Khaak E Watan!!! Qarz Ada Kiyun Nahi Hota ?
The same people who always claim 9/11 was carried out by the americans and blame blackwater for all the terrorism in Pakistan always claim that MQM kills it's own men.
@Aysha M (original version): "You are right Karachites are expendable, why mourn them" No, Karachites are not expendable. Mind your language, please.
For all those who are losing there mind on peace full "youm e soog"
this is what PTI people did when there MPA got killed
http://beta.dawn.com/news/1016172/violence-in-hangu-continues-11-killed
This incident reminds one of a very famous quote by a Muslim socio-political ideologist and leader, whose name I will not quote here. On the killing of a very senior member of a government, he stated that the incident reminded him of "Chickens Coming Home to Roost." The thought behind the quote stated that certain governments have planted the seeds of violence and hatred in their land, and in others as well, and created "Chickens" to go out and sow those seeds. Sometimes, however, those same "Chickens" come back home to roost, planting the same seeds of violence and hatred they have sown elsewhere. The regimes of our nation have been doing this for a long time now, simply a matter of time that the same violence and hatred they have sown in the soil of the land has now come back to strike them.
ET, you missed to mention the Pedestrian who died as well. Kindly mention that and try to find his name. I will really appreciate that.
The world is seeing its first religious-political party-sectarian-terrorism Civil war in Pakistan.
Hate Hate and only hate for karachi, (we are liberals) ( we didnt heard on radio we gave our every thing for pakistan)
So all terrorist of any kind cyber or on the street kill us all or other wise karachi will make you pay for every love one lost........
Sad! Every instance of killing is highly condemnable. But, alas, who live by the sword, die by the sword!
@Aysha M.
Try and make those "territorial changes". We won't make the same mistakes that we made in 1971.
its not good news for us its increase the disturbing life in Karachi,,,
@Blunt: Na Maloom Afraad are in action on the streets of Karachi since Karachites chose to support Mohatarrama Fatima Jinnah and they remain on the streets to date
it is tragic... really so sad on the demise of father and son... they were human being like us ...doesn,t matter which political party they belongs to... they were beloved of some one and they were hope of some one... God bless them and keep our entire nation in his blessings..
How long, how many more? Is this going to stop and stop before it's all too late and nothing can be saved anymore. Let this be end of violence, please. This hatred, this wasting of innocent lives and this indifference just can not continue. With every such shameless killings of Pakistani citizens of specific ethnicity Pakistan is being pushed closer to brink, much more is at stake than just economic hub etc. it's Pakistan itself and all who care must, please, must come forward and save Pakistanis and Pakistan.
donot kill some one when he is accompanied with family and in mosques
Inna Lillahe Wa Inna Ilaihe Rajioun.
wonder why all these killings going on for the last ten years and nothing is being done about it by the parties incharge there? why all this silent at the higher level?
Very sad to note that some blunts are still worried about " youme sog " and economic losses instead of mourning on such cold blooded killings, lost of lives and the plight of the deseased families and relatives.
Na Maloom Afraad in action on streets of Karachi :(
@Aysha M (original version): Not to belittle anyone, but PTI too lost two of its MPA in KPK in last 30 days.
@Modi: Are you insane ???? or suffering from deep rooted hate ?
@Modi: MQM has lost a parliamentarian, it is unfortunate that you readily blame the party for this
what about Modi comments it falls under your moderation policy
@Khurram The Muhajir: @Blunt:
That is all you could say.
You are right Karachites are expendable, why mourn them
The old game begins the enemy of Karachi is waiting for reactions and on the basis of it they are seeking excuse to launch an operation on Urdu speaking people to punish them for their votes for MQM
Sorry to hear the bad news. We can foresee that there will be "Youm-e-Soug" and all transport and businesses will be closed down for another 3 days.
At the rate at which legislators are being bumped off the Assembly will be emptied before its term is up. Is this the work of the good Taliban or bad Taliban ???
What a country I belong to. Today worshippers are killed in a mosque killing some an injuring many while this MPA is gunned down in Karachi when he came out of mosque after offering Friday prayers. What is the message-don't go to mosque or be killed? Now condolence messages will be issued, inquiry commissions to be instituted, some monetary cash will be announced and thats end of the story. None will be caught, punished and or hanged. Wait for more killings. Iqbal Hadi Zaidi / Kuwait / iqbalhadizaidi.formerdiplomat@hotmail.com
Inallahe-Wa-InallaheRajeon
Get ready for another Youm-e-Sog
Very sad news :(. Why is the Sind government not doing any thing for law and order!!!
I strongly condemn this !!!
Inna Lillahe Wa Inna Ilaihe Rajioun. It is very sad but our media is hypocrite. Few days ago an MPA was killed in KPK but it was not a big news like this. Is the life of MQM MPA is more important than life of any other MPA in our country? In fact every single life is important be it a President or someone who sleeps on the roads in our country. But our media, public and system gives more importance to those who are ruling on us. This increases the barriers of inequality. Very sad
An other youm-e-sog to be called soon.
Bloodshed like this is followed by territorial changes, before it gets to that point, Sindh government should show some seriousness to restore peace
Looks like MQM needed more sympathy and to divert attention of the public and media in the wake on-going investigation of *Imran Farooq case*.. More strikes expected soon. I would like to request ET to please keep us update on the Imran Farooq case and this news should not overlap it.
Innalilahay wa ina allahay rajay oon
No other party has lost its parliamentarians workers like MQM
