PESHAWAR:

The provincial budget has allocated Rs4.69 billion for 20 development projects in Peshawar.

The provincial capital bears the burden of a massive population and vast areas of the city are deprived of clean drinking water and suffer due to an outdated sewage and sanitation system.

While announcing its first budget for the fiscal year 2013-2014, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led coalition government promised to make Peshawar a model city by initiating various developmental projects and completing ongoing ones.

In this regard it has promised to establish a water and sanitation company to make potable water available to the people of Peshawar.

It also announced a feasibility study would be carried out with the help of the transport department to establish a mass transit system in the city. This is aimed at tackling exceeding traffic problems.

Funds have also been allocated for the completion of present development projects, including the Mufti Mehmood Flyover, the expansion of Ring Road from Charsadda Road to Pajaggi Road and from Pajaggi Road to Warsak Road.

Several new projects have been set aside for the city including the construction of overpasses in Hayatabad Phase-III over Jamrud Road, near Islamia College University and on Iqra Chowk.

A new project titled ‘Peshawar Uplift Programme’, which costs Rs1 billion, is also part of the plan. The project aims to beautify the city.

The budget further prioritised the expansion of railway overpasses and expediting work on purchasing land for the construction of Southern Bypass.

Meanwhile, funds will also be allocated for improving the current sewage system, and repair and renovation of the Warsak Road sewage treatment plant.
