There are those within the Parivar who are publicly hailing Modi but privately fuming that there is no space left for “dissent” in the party. And I thought leftists used words like dissent! Well, leftists would use it a lot more if Modi did become PM. Mr Modi does not like dissent, disagreement or debate. If Modi becomes PM, a lot of people should be ready for sedition cases and income tax raids.
However, I don’t think it will be cataclysmic for India’s Muslims. He has done to Gujarat’s Muslims what he had to, and achieved what he had to. It will, however, be another symbolic blow to the Indian Muslim’s right to live as equal citizens that a leader who is liked by his core constituency for having “shown Muslims their place” becomes prime minister.
And yet, in a cynical, masochist way, I have a death wish. I think Narendra Modi will also be good for India. He will be good because India’s left-liberals, “centrists”, constitutionalists, radicals, freethinkers, Communists, Congressis, Dalits, Muslims — a lot of people, will unite to cry “Fascism! Fascism!”, from morning to evening. They will bring such scrutiny upon every action of his as there hasn’t been on the Congress-led coalition that has ruled India since 2004.
A journalist recently met a senior minister in Manmohan Singh’s government and asked, sir ye kia ho raha hai? Why is your government in such bad shape? The minister said, “Hum raj kar rahein hain.” We are ruling.
When I heard this anecdote secondhand, I completely believed it, because of the attitude of the so-called United Progressive Alliance government. They bought over votes to pass a bill for a nuclear deal with the US in 2008. The 2009 elections were held six months after 26/11. The BJP made national security an election issue. To its own surprise, the Congress increased its seats from 145 to 206. Urban and rural voters alike rewarded them for what they thought was good governance. This return to power went to their heads.
Virtually since the beginning of the second term, this government has battled one crisis after another. And their reaction to every crisis is brazen arrogance. They did not save the day for Commonwealth games when they could have, they blamed the auditor for exposing a telecom scam, they put Anna Hazare in jail for asking for a Lokpal and even killed a Baba Ramdev supporter asking for a similar demand. Students came out to protest against rape and they responded with tear gas. They put Muslims in jail in fake terrorism cases, they hanged Kasab and Afzal to appear strong, weren’t able to do anything about anti-Muslim violence in Congress-ruled Assam, let the situation in Kashmir worsen again, allowed the economy to tumble, let Maoists get the better of them, slapped sedition cases against those who don’t want a nuclear power plant next to their house, put people in jail for criticising the government online, and can’t even pass legislation they think will fetch them votes. Is the Congress a good-looking BJP?
And how do India’s centre-left-radical intellectuals and activists respond to such a government? With some exceptions, by silence. Why? They think criticising the Congress will help the BJP. But the Congress’s decline is anyway helping the BJP. And thus, our leftists make themselves even more politically irrelevant because they have nothing to say.
If Modi becomes PM, our leftists will have a lot to say. Even if the BJP gets enough seats to cobble together a coalition, the coalition partners are unlikely to support Modi as PM. Ideally we need a Third Front break to show the “national” parties their place, but it is still possible that the Congress may be able to put together a UPA-3 (a UPA government for the third time). And that is scarier than Modi-1.

What do the Muslims in Gujarat think about Modi ? He has turned the state around economically and as I note no major riots have taken place after the last big one. Modi is a patriot who is looking to lead India into the 21century...a young India (85% 25yrs population) and if he can galvanize enough support from other regional players he he very well may become PM...but lets not get carried away b the media as India is a multicultural country which will not tolerate fascism ...just not in the DNA. BJP is just another political outfit as the UPA is... And any future govt. will be Ann alliane of regional political parties. so getting back to Modi...yes he should become PM .

Although I am a "congressi" I too think Modi would make a good PM. National politics is different from state politics....remember, BJP won an election on mandir platform, yet they were not able to build one!

No, he is not right, neither are you. It's one Gujarati who demanded division and to achieve it he led his people to 'Direct Action'. The other Gujarati never agreed to partition. It is Congress and British who lost their nerve in the face of barbaric violence that 'Direct action' brought on the streets of India and agreed to partition. When the partition took place and the leaders of both the countries were busy celebrating their new found independence; the other Gujarati was visiting riot affected places and people (both hindus and muslims) 1,600 km away from the capital city of Delhi. He didn't even participate in any of the celebration of independence any where till his death. You can say that the present day Gujarati Modi is much like the old Gujarati of yours. He is trying to be a hindu Jinnah.

Incidentally Jinnah's family had been Lohanas who were also traders And I gather that Modi belongs to a backward caste. As did many 'princely' families in Indian history! I don't care which party is in power as long as: They bring back patriotism, so "Indians" remember that it is "India" that gives them the definition. They relegate religious denomination to its rightful place, secondary to being human beings. They remind us that it is ok to be one of the honest and forgotten rather than one of the corrupt and remembered for posterity. They polish up the only country they have got o that our citizens are not illegal immigrants in other countries.

Mr. Vik seems to be clueless about India, in general. He does not seem to know that there are Hindus in India and that is not only Muslims who need to be able to live in freedom. Also, he says that, "they hanged Kasab and Afzal to appear strong". Perhaps he does not know that both of these men were terrorists and went through a lengthy, detailed, and fair judicial process. These men were not randomly picked for hanging to make the government appear strong, as he seems to imply. Crying "Fascism!" against someone does not make that person a fascist. Only a fascist would believe that it does. Mr. Vij, I suggest you get your head out of a place where the sun does not shine and actually try to achieve some clarity of thought and expression. Perhaps you could begin by searching for, knowing, and understanding the actual facts instead of making up stuff that is based on nothing but your own imagination.

Any fool knows that there has never been a govt at the centre worse than UPA under MM Singh and no govt can be worse than this in the future either. So, any, yes, any govt other than UPA3 will be better. Another term for UPA is unimaginable.

It's interesting that 'hindus' do not appear in your long list of groups that will cry "Fascism! Fascism!" once Modi becomes the PM of India. They do not even appear as a token of representation as it could have been, if you mentioned 'a section of hindus', or 'some hindus'; while 'Muslims' are there in all its plurality. Is it because you think all hindus are for fascism, while all Muslims are against it. I think you don't, honestly! In fact, I believe that you have counted 'some hindus' who are scattered among the “centrists”, constitutionalists, radicals, freethinkers, Communists, Congressis and Dalits", hence no mention in specific. But should I also believe that there is no Muslim among the “centrists”, constitutionalists, radicals, freethinkers, Communists, Congressis, Dalits that you referred to? A hue and cry is being made by the Congress and the so called secular parties in India about the rise of an able orator, administrator and a nationalist leader in Modi which over the last 65 years or more was missing except a few leaders like Nehru, Indira and Atalji. At present all the leaders of so called secular parties are fascist, casteist, communal and fundamentalist and need to be thrown out to make a real secular India where all people of every caste and creed can grow with equal opportunity on the basis of merit without any reservation. If they divide the country in various castes and communities then a time will again come for another division of the country very soon which needs to be arrested without further delay. Hence it is the urgent need of the country to elect a nationalist leader like Modi for accelerated growth and development of the country. It is not a time to remember past happenings as there could be blames and counter blames without any outcome. Muslims need to realise that they are citizens of this great country which has been called Hindusthan as its varied cultures are resembling the old BHARAT where hindus were a large majority. All other cultures have merged in Hindu cultutre and now a days Hinduism is not a religion but it is a way of life.
We have seen congress rule for more than 60 years where all these divisive politics were attempted like English people to rule this country. We have also seen 6 years rule of Atalji where development and progress of the country was felt utmost. We have seen all third front leaders including Nitish who have wishful thinking to become Prime minister at any cost and who have no capabilities as compared to Mr Modi. All such people must be rejected to see India as a developed country in the 21st century.
Whether we like it or not, Narendra Modi appears to the next PM of India. Reading this gives one a sense of the immense complications involved with Indian politics. The good thing seems to be that a machinery does exist to address these complications.

Currently we do not have a leadership in India. Its a leadership minus government. As far as Modi is concern, he is perceived as a No-nonsense, able administrator, proper policy maker and who can provide a Strong leadership to India.
At least he is not pseudo-secularist. For him people are not vote bank, but a citizen of the nation.
His "Facism" will be taken care by our Judiciary and Constitution.
Narendra Modi is neither the dreaded fascist that the extreme leftists make of him; nor is he a visionary leader that his admirers make of him. He is a clever man with a mediocre mind and an opportunist to boot. He will not ruin India but there is not much good he can do either. He has the mind of a petty businessman and the solutions that he offers are also of that calibre. If he does become PM he will be almost the most mediocre man to have ascended that post. I agree with Shivam on the unintended payoff of having NaMO as PM.

Everyone is running scared - it is much like in Sholay with parties across the socialist spectrum begging "Beta humko vote de de nahin to Modi aa jayega". Such scare tactics no longer work. If you are ideologically opposed to the BJP, Narendra Modi or anyone else will make no difference, and most of this glorification of Vajpayee and (surprise!) Advani is to sow dissension in the rank and file of the BJP; tragically for the likes of the writer, it appears to be making Modi's support base stronger because they have come to know what to expect (nothing new in over eleven years except country-wide focus on malnutrition in Gujarat), and to expect what they already know and others are likely to soon find out.

I heard this author on a TV channel, rudely interrupting widely respected Madhu Kishwar with his half baked ideas. Agreed Madhu Kishwar supports Modi, but that's no crime, there are millions who do.
Let us get facts right. Fascism is a ideology of autocratic regimes with hierarchical governance. It has come to be associated with right wing, but there is nothing 'right wing' about it. Majority of fascist govts in the world have been Communist or Socialist (what the author here calls leftist), with no scope for dissent.
The biggest Fascist India has seen was from Congress - Indira Gandhi. And she was admired by many (including most congressmen and Leftists) even today!! They say 'trains ran on time'!!
Is Modi a fascist? He perhaps is to a certain extent. He stands for ironfisted, authoritarian governance. But, there isn't evidence to suggest he doesn't tolerate dissent. All leaders have a way of curbing dissent. After all who has survived in Congress criticizing Sonia Gandhi? But, a fascist would use violence to curb dissent. Indira Gandhi used to throw opposition leaders to Jail. Has modi done that?? NO! He is unlikely to do so, because he'd have learnt his lessons after 2002. Even Modi's critics agree that post-2002 Gujarat has been a model state without any discrimination on religion. In 2002, he was just 3 months in to the job, and may have muddled along without clarity, but Modi seems to have gotten better.
Modi is perhaps Authoritarian, but he is democratic. He isn't authoritarian by breaking constitution or law. He is authoritarian within the limits of law. That can't be called fascist.
Is authoritarian govt. bad?
Evidence doesn't suggest so. Authoritarian China has done well. Singapore. Dubai have done even better. The problem isn't authoritarianism. Problem is lack of governance, dishonesty, clarity of purpose, corruption & absence of law abidance. Which is plenty in India even now. An iron fisted but clean, efficient govt. can produce miracles.
It is fashionable for Modi haters to paint him in all sorts of adjectives. 'Communal' 'Fascist' are just a couple of those. The reality in India (or even larger sub-continent) is almost every leader is that.
Modi at least stands for less corruption and better governance.
While I support Modi, here are some hard facts :
1) He is simply not a popular leader. The Urban middle-class youth constitute a miniscule percentage of India's population. To the rest, he is non-existent. Also 80% of India votes on the basis of caste.
2) I don't like how Modi is presented as a solution to everything, a la Imran Khan in the neighborhood. Of course Imran Khan's immaturity cannot be compared with a seasoned leader like Modi. Nonetheless, he should not be projected as a solution to everything.
3) I don't like the goondaism of Modi's supporters, as they did before Advani's house after his resignation.
4) His autocratic nature does not augur well for the country in the long run, if he becomes the PM.
Hope, there won't be enough ugly noises coming from Modi and his supporters in the next several months running upto elections, lest it can change my vote.

I came away with no clear thought from reading this post. It's just sarcastically beating around the bush on a serious subject. India is in dire need to find a clear headed leader who can set right the way we run our politics as well as our society. We Indians have become far too self indulgent for our own good and we need a strong father in the house. No one fits the bill better than Modi. Yes, Modi has learnt to govern a state well, he now needs to learn to carry the country with him, something he needs to work on.

i do not see Modi to be PM in future. Yes, he has done well .in Gujrat. Muslims too in gujrat are not un happy now, it is the congress and likesare going against him/ BJP. Vote politics sir, . In democracy there are many push and pulls in any decisions/development projecats which create avaoidble problems. that is why autocratic states( with inherent risks) achieve development fast than the democratic set up.

I would love to see Modi becoming Indian PM. This would create a culture that if any CM has done exceptionally well in their ruling states then they would have a chance of becoming a PM. This kind of culture would bring some kind of hope in a currupt political system. Whoever joins politics aims to become PM, some succeed and some don't. Like in congress, no matter how you perform you will never be able to become a PM (unless your one leg is in the grave, congress always find old PM's for transition. They are always afraid if they make a young spontaneous PM then they might not be able to control him. Same way they had Sitaram Kesri if you remember). Now Modi, Yes he was involved in riots. Those riots not only killed Muslims but Hindus also. Congress had many riots, who can forget 84? Advani was involved in Babri masjit riots. As a good Indian society we have given a message by not bringing BJP govt. in the last two terms after Godhra riots. At this stage India is in dire need of development and progress. We are not sure if Modi will bring any change but we are sure that congress would be definitely a waste as we have seen in the last 2 terms. I think Modi deserves a chance, if he does well, great, if he doesn't then lets throw him away in the then next elections. Peace and Love.
Well for India, the direction it has moved in past few years clear display lack of leadership, lack of implementation, lack of controlling authority...in any field for that matter! So, thinking on progressive mindset, we can conclusively state that for a country like India where 'Mostly, all of public work is 1/2 done' & anyways 'None listens to any One', it is super clear that a leader who thinks & almost acts like hitler can only get discipline, seriousness, work accomplishment-ness for our corrupt-ridden place! Perhaps, that is the best bet India has, if at all it needs to compete with progressive nations & take the path of glory!

Stupid article. In a democracy it is for the people to decide and if the people of India in their wisdom decide to elect NM..so be it...The constitution provides protections for all Indians. NM cannot do anything against the constitution...

Many educated Indians want Modi to be the Prime Minister Of India. He has every quality to lead India to the right direction. But unfortunately he won't become PM. Congress in India is really in strong position. It will be hard to educate every Indian. Modi targets youths through social networking sites. What an idea!

Sorry dear, you have to tolerate them for a while. After the break-up of the Soviet-bloc and China (Vietnam too) subscribing to the capitalist economy, India remains the last refuge of the commis. Communists are materialistic and atheist. Irony is that they are so similar to the religious fundamentalists. Both are faithful to, and swear, by their book. In the case of commis it is 'Das Capital' by Carl Marx (A great philosopher/economist on his own right) who famously claimed, "Thank god, I am not a marxist." It goes to his credit that he understood his followers long before they descended on us.
UPA might have ruled from 2004. But congress has been ruling since 1947. First people have to teach the politicians that they are elected to govern and not to rule. Second the economic growth might have happened in UPA's first term. But actually the gains from 2004 to 2008 are the fruits of policies laid out in the previous governments, say from 1997 to 2004. Economy, power sector and infrastructure are in ruins now. Inflation is so high. Indian currency value is tumbling. Mr.Chidabaram has started to tax even gold. All these crippling effects are the results of policies passed during the previous government, that is UPA-1. Blessing in disguise is, UPA-2 did not pass any policy. So, there is going to be no effect. Anyhow, there can be no bad happen to already worse one.
Everybody comments about BJP as communal and Modi as Facist. What about the other psedo secular parties. For example, Congress, it is run by a dynasty. Its been led by single family. Poor Mahatma Gandhi did not know how his name would be misused by a family as surname just to gain popularity. Second, all these pseudo secular parties try to appease the so called minorities whose population above 20% of total population of India, the muslims. They do anything to appease those minorities, meet the clerics, pay attention to clerics and even import muslims from Bangladesh.
Frankly, the media, the so called liberals and the congress are eroding the sense of patriotism by talking all non sense.

Statuesque forces are against Modi and calling him by all sorts of names. fact is that almost 99% young Indians want Modi to lead the nation. People don't care what few journalists call Modi. Modi is a no match to Late Mrs. Gandhi when it comes to being a fascist.
Modi becoming prime minister is a wishful thinking. Indians are not fools. He is a media and social network hype.. BJP wrote a death will few years back by singing "Shining India". Now, they will loose a winnable battle by chanting " Go Modi" Mantra. BJP does not have common sense in seeing India has federal polity. Modi will need allies. Modil is not Atal Bajpaee who attracted conflicting allies because of his personality. This is not Gujarat or any other state politics which could be own by few strategies. India is vast and complex.His so called development mantra will not take him any further. I am feeling pity for BJP that they will loose a election which they are expected to win.
