KARACHI: Pakistan crashed out in the open category of the Bridge Federation of Asia and Middle East (BFAME) Zonal Championship 2013 after a last-round defeat to Bahrain 35-18 in Ahmedabad yesterday.

The team finished last among seven countries with a total of 155 points after 14 matches at the championship. Pakistan managed just three wins, while earning two byes against Jordan, but nine defeats brought an end to their campaign.

Hosts India, Bangladesh, Bahrain and the UAE made it to the semi-finals. The two finalists will earn the right to play at the Bermuda Bowl World Championship 2013, due to be held in September in Bali.

“Our open event team was inexperienced so we expected this to happen,” seniors’ team member Hasan Jawad told The Express Tribune. “They were competing against some very seasoned players from India Sri Lanka and the UAE. We definitely didn’t have a chance in the open event. But we will try and finish in the top-two in the seniors event.”

Pakistan, defending champions in the seniors’ category, have so far failed to impress as well. By the end of the 10th round, Pakistan were lying at the bottom with just 124 points after defeats to India 32-24 and Sri Lanka 38-23.

Women impress again

If there was one category Pakistan were doing well in, it was the women’s. Pakistan are currently at the top of the table after the players defeated Sri Lanka 61-21. At the conclusion of round five, Pakistan lead with 190.5 points ahead of India who have an aggregate of 169.5.

The women’s team has only lost one out of 10 matches at the event so far with Sri Lanka, India and Palestine completing the list of participants in the category.

The women and seniors’ teams play their last two rounds today.
