Newly-elected Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has appointed Aftab Sultan, a grade 22 officer of the police group, as the new director general of the Intelligence Bureau -- Pakistan’s key civil intelligence body.
A Prime Minister House spokesman issued a press release confirming this appointment. Sultan, who has served in this capacity earlier, was serving as IG Punjab after being appointed by caretaker Chief Minister Punjab Najam Sethi.
Sultan has replaced Wadood Shah for this office. He had served as the chief of Intelligence Bureau in 2011.
Born in 1954, Sultan belongs to district Faisalabad and holds Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws degrees. He joined the police force as assistant superintendent of police in 1977 and was promoted to the office of Superintendent of Police in 1983.
Following this, Sultan was elevated to the position of Deputy Inspector General in 2000. Owing to his excellent services, the federal government promoted Aftab Sultan in next grade BPS-21 and after this promotion, he was posted as Additional IG of Finance and Welfare in Punjab.
During his career, he served as Superintendent and Senior Superintendent in different districts of Punjab including Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sahiwal, Khushab and Faisalabad. He has also worked in the Special Branch.
Apart from serving in these capacities, Sultan served as DIG Elite Force, DIG Welfare and Finance and Director Research and Development.
He was RPO Sargodha in former president Pervez Musharraf’s tenure and had left the post over differences regarding the referendum.
