Pakistan’s military is all set to adopt a “new concept” of war for fighting future conventional threats, specifically pre-empting India’s cold-start military doctrine, revealed security officials.
The new war concept, developed after four years of war games and military exercises, seeks to improve the mobilisation time of troops and develop an integrated response from the combined fighting arms of the army, navy and air forces, in case of a conventional military threat.
It will formally be put into practice with the culmination of the “Azm-e-Nou” war-games series this month. The exercises, which started in 2009, have been part of the army’s new concept of war fighting, designed to respond to the threat posed by India’s Pakistan-specific cold-start doctrine.
The cold-start doctrine is intended to allow India’s conventional forces to perform swift and unexpected holding penetrations within the first 72 hours of hostilities.
The doctrine has been designed to give India an edge in the first few days of combat operations, before international pressure could be brought to bear on India and before the Pakistani military could respond effectively.
The Indian military, however, publicly denies the existence of any such doctrine. The final series of ‘Azm-e-Nau IV’ kicked off in Islamabad at the National Defence University on Monday to validate operational plans prepared in view of the emerging threat environment, said a senior military official.
All services chiefs are being hosted by Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani for the finalisation of the new concept.
“The army war games are the culmination of a series of such exercises and aims at validation and crystallisation of operational plans prepared in view of the emerging threat environment,” said a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
Operational plans of the Pakistan Air Force and Pakistan Navy are also being finalised in close coordination with the army.
The war games will continue for two weeks, the statement added.
Unveiling details of the concept, the military source said that after the implementation of the new war fighting strategy, the Pakistan Army would be able to mobilise its forces faster than India.

While Pakistan was busy thinking about how to counter "Cold Start". India has marched leaps and bounds in other missile technologies and is countering China at the same time.. Pakistan should have understood that formulating a strategy to counter ColdStart is a waste when India publicly declared that it can take on two faced war simultaniously ... India has many tricks in her hat .. May be Pakistan will have to use those short range missles to counter Indias cold start on Baluchistan and Sindh or Afghanistan ????
@Ricky and antony..all your Iron Man and Superman Gadgets failed in Afghanistan, failed miserably actually, to a point where your soldiers go back and commit suicide..you don need gadgets to fight, you need a heart. you cant take Pakistan because you are not a Pakistani..but hey don worry, we will help you leave Afghanistan in peace, like always!
"Tilting at the windmills"!
No mention of Strategic Assets like LeT,LeJs ?? Would be interesting to know in which part of wargame would they be counted in.
Are you people who are blaming Pak Army for load shedding, insane? How is exactly Pak army responsible for Load shedding. Idiots elected by YOU had 5 years to develop an energy policy and instigate change. Nothing has happened. You are dealing with Oil and Gas mafia, just like water mafia, coupled with incompetent and corrupt civil administrators. How is army complicit? In fact most army men cannot even afford a generator or a UPS and suffer from the same load shedding that you do. Get you facts straight before blabbering.
Which military unveils its strategy and tactics and that one particular enemy in a press release? It is as much a bluff as India's cold start is. And both sides are aware of it.
Sounds like the army asserting its grip over the other 2 military arms to further deny them whatever independence they have... what is the point of all this when we have a nuclear deterrent?
@Riaz Ahmad Your point is ok, can i define it whole as a Nuclear Blackmail? please make a correction. In India Generals are not on the top who make decisions.
Military science dictates that you should take on the enemy by utter surprise to create the shock and awe factor. Here we have spelled out our broad India specific strategy for the world to know like thunder before the storm. This is more likely to put the incoming PML-N government under pressure. PML-N please watch you pro-India gestures.
I was told that our nukes were to make sure India never crosses our border?
@Char Latan:
ok this one is sad but funny....
@Punjabi: If only they had strategies to fight the TTP!
Seems like internal threats have been handled and the ttp has been defeated.
More posturing for the media. There's nothing new, the German concept of blitzkrieg and its later manifestation in the Air-land battle is also largely based upon synergizing the various force components. America in particular has honed it to a fine art, I doubt we have the requisite operational communication and coordination given how overwhelming the army is in our command structure.
Good counter tactic!
The Pakistani Army is pulling wool over the eyes of the Pakistani public. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Tormented by loadshedding on one side and an Army with a country on the other.
Cold start is indeed just as dangerous for India as it is for Pakistan, I believe it is nothing but hubris on part of India. What might begin as an Indian COLD START operation, carries a very grave risk of turning into Pakistani HOT END operation involving tactical short range nuclear weapons. It will be certain destruction of both countries before international pressure has any chance to bear. I don't believe Indian generals are that suicidal.
cant deny.. it was a relief experience reading the article till end. Good to know atleats someone is awake & planing day & night for our life assurance.
how will this stop killings in karachi??
This is the right time for India to show aggression by conducting multiple excercises using Globemaster and latest israel avionics attached aircrafts and pakistan will respond immediately by firing few nasrs and equalling military excercises and within months tit for tat bravado from military strategiest from both countries will enable severe security fear in pakistan's new government which by public pressure will allocate more funds to security.. Come 2013 end ,balance of payment crisis and IMF loan repayment and pakistan economy will be nearing abyss. Well guess which military strategiest won?.
Despite all these claims India and the whole world knows that like Abbottabad and Salala any invaders can come in and they would have one to two hours to complete their mission before our planes take off or army moves.
And they require 1000 billion from budget for this CONCEPT. What happened to concepts like Operation Gibraltar,Operation Kargal and 26/11. They failed and backfired. Fingers crossed...
Furthermore, according to the new doctrine, blackouts will no longer be necessary due to load shedding..
