LAHORE:

A three-day cleanliness campaign that was launched in the Walled City on Thursday kicked off with a walk from Kotwali Chowk to Masjid Wazir Khan.

The campaign has been jointly organised by the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) and the Walled City Lahore Authority (WCLA).

According to an LWMC press release, the campaign, Litter Free Walled City, aims to “mobilise and educate the residents about [disposal of] solid waste and the use of waste bins and containers”.

Four camps have been established at Rang Mahal, Kotwali Chowk, Sheesh Mahal Ghati and Taxali Chowk to address citizens’ complaints on the spot.

A large number of residents, including students, took part in the walk and called the initiative commendable.

Akbar, a resident, said “It is a great initiative as it will help preserve centuries old monuments and historical buildings in the area.”

Raza Mir, a shopkeeper at Delhi Gate said, “The pamphlets and brochures provided to us are quite thought-provoking. They give essential information about how to keep our area clean.”

Ruksana Bibi, another resident said, “The waste bags and brochures they provided us today have made me committed to keeping the walled city clean.”

Asad Ahmed, an assistant manager at the LWMC, said that the company realised the importance of engaging and educating the community to maintain cleanliness. “That’s what has brought us to the walled city,” he said.
