Street crime: Robber among two killed in shootout

Two citizens injured by villagers; robber’s accomplice flees.

Two men, including a robber, were shot dead on Thursday in a shootout between fleeing robbers and some villagers in Allahwali Basti. Two more villagers were injured and taken to a hospital, where they were later reported to be out of danger.



Batala police said that two men snatched gold jewellery and cash from a woman after stopping the rickshaw she was riding near Muhammadi Chowk graveyard. They then fled on a motorcycle. The woman started shouting attracting some men at a nearby shop.


The men, later joined by some residents, chased the robbers. One of the robbers shot at them. The villagers shot back, killing one of the robbers on the spot. His accomplice fled.


Two villagers and a passer-by were also shot and taken to Allied Hospital, where the passer-by was pronounced dead. He was later identified as Baba Rasheed.


The injured men- Usman Manj and Zahid Manj- were reported to be out of danger.



Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Nafees Gohar and Iqbal Town Superintendent Imran Kishwar visited the scene.


The body of the deceased robber was sent for a post-mortem examination.


SSP Gohar said that police had recovered two pistols, bullets and the loot from the deceased robber.  He said he seemed to be in his 20s and had yet to be identified.  He said police were looking for the second robber.


Talking to The Express Tribune, some villagers said that violent crime was rising in the area due to police negligence.


Naseer Ahmad, one of the residents, said there was need for some police pickets.
