ISLAMABAD: Strongly rebutting reports circulating in a section of the media, Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Monday said that he would “resign only if the accountability courts prove him guilty”.

Addressing a news conference, Malik said, “I am not an NRO [National Reconciliation Ordinance] beneficiary because no court ever convicted me.”

He added that he would file a damage suit for one billion rupees against a private television channel for airing false news regarding his resignation as well the shifting of his family to London.

However, the minister confirmed that he had shifted his family to London as his younger son is studying there.

“I am sitting here in the office and will not leave it till the prime minister asks me to resign,” he said, adding “Let us wait for the court’s decisions, which would decide my fate.”

Earlier, Malik chaired a meeting on the issue of Dr Aafia Siddiqui’s repatriation which was also attended by her sister Dr Fauzia Siddiqui.

He informed them that a special team headed by the Federal Investigation Agency will be constituted with representatives from Karachi police and Interpol to collect evidence regarding her alleged abduction.

“Record of airport departure, registration of the FIR and the statement of the Afghan government will all be collected,” he said. He also said that a team of lawyers from the International Justice Network would be invited to advice on the future course of action.

“The US government would be approached to shift Dr Aafia to a federal penitentiary and be provided living premises keeping in view her medical condition,” Malik said.
