SUKKUR/ HYDERABAD: The districts of Hyderabad and Mirpurkhas divisions observed a shutter-down strike on Wednesday on the call of the 10-party alliance against the alleged rigging during the May 11 elections.

The strike was largely peaceful except for one incident of violence in Dadu where two groups, believed to be political workers, had a scuffle when one of the them tried to force the shopkeepers to close the market. No one was, however, injured.

The strike also affected the Higher Secondary Certificate part I and II exams in four districts of Mirpurkhas division. Exams were, however, held as per schedule in the nine districts of Hyderabad division.

Business as usual in upper Sindh

The strike called by the 10-party alliance against the alleged rigging failed to generate response in most parts of upper Sindh. Business activities and traffic remained normal in most cities and towns, including Sukkur, Rohri, Panu Aqil, Ghotki, Mirpur Mathelo, Daharki, Ubauro, Kashmore, Jacobabad, Thull, Shikarpur, Naushero Feroze and Larkana among others.

However, a complete shutter down strike was observed in Khairpur and traffic remained suspended. In Kandhkot, unidentified armed men resorted to aerial firing which forced the shopkeepers to close their shops. Small groups of people also burnt tyres at different places due to which traffic was off the roads.
