Environmental initiative: International Day for Biodiversity observed

The University of Swat marked International Day for Biodiversity on Wednesday with a call to conserve medicinal plants from northern Pakistan.


The event was jointly organised by the University of Swat and Agricultural University of Faisalabad. Speaking at the occasion, renowned scholar Professor Dr Zabta Khan said the northern parts of the country were rich in medicinal plants and that there was a need to protect them for future generations.

Among others who spoke, a World Health Organisation representative, Kashif Jan, gave concise introductions to major diseases. Dr Amir Jameel, a representative of Agricultural University Faisalabad, also spoke on the occasion and asked for mutual cooperation on biodiversity issues.

Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Jahanzeb said there was a need to work together in order to address biodiversity issues. He added efforts were underway to form an inter-university consortium which would help research on these issues.
