“I have decided not to pursue this case as I feel it is in the better interest of the country”, said Advocate Chaudhry Aslam Ghuman in a hurried press conference on Friday night.
The case is based on First Information Report (FIR) which was registered against Musharraf on August 11, 2009 by the Secretariat police for detaining over 60 judges including Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
The case had been opened on Advocate Ghuman’s application, submitted at a local police station.
On Friday, Ghuman, accompanied by two friends failed to justify why he was disassociating himself from the case, saying the country is facing through turmoil and he feels he should not peruse the matter further.
When asked by a reporter how exactly would the country benefit from this move, Ghuman failed to reply.

@Simple Man: The personal Vendetta was and is to have kept Musharraf out and away from elections !! Vendetta fullfilled Detaining Judges is not a crime against the motherland !! Quit over dramatizing it ! What have the Judges done for the Nation !! Making headlines and delievering zero verdicts !!
@Above the Law and justice?: There is no comparison between the two. Musharraf came into power after his plane was hijacked, and deposed a corrupt and failed regime of Sharif, and the nation rejoiced. No one was killed. As far as the missing persons are concerned it is an insurgency that Pakistan forces are fighting, not any different from America that had to create Guantanamo to keep the terrorist suspects locked up. Musharraf gave progress, security, and credibility to Pakistan internationally - until NS and BB showed back up. People in Pakistan still genenrally respect and support Musharraf for all the good he did. If he were so unpopular then why was he unjustly and unlawfully restrained from the elections?
@Aftab: Justice for what sir????
@Enlightened:
I had commented on ET about one month back that some foreign powers are working behind the scene to bail out Musharraf for his safe exit from Pakistan.
I believe Aabpara and Rawalpindi, both are within Pakistan. Why are you saying that these are 'foreign powers'?
@observer As much as I disagree with Sher, and their policies. i think it would be best to have everyone on board... running a smooth government would require the Shikari in KPK and Sher in Federal and punjab to work together. Meanwhile shikari can keep the Sher in-check as a strong opposition voice in the national assembly
I agree with Bahraini, these judges were part of validation . In case of Advocate "Ghumman" he said it right that country is passing through crises, Though election took place but ISSUES are still there and these needs to be tackled. Move on please.
@Maria: How about the judges who validated him, took oath of office from him and all those numerous PCO judges? Some people are just obessed with one person!
General Jorge Videla, an Argentina’s dictator at the height of its “Dirty War” against leftist activists, died this Friday in prison while serving time for crimes against humanity. He was 87. Videla had launched a ferocious crackdown on leftists and suspected supporters when he took power in 1976. As many as 30,000 people were kidnapped and “disappeared” by the military and suspected regime opponents were swept into secret prisons, tortured and murdered. While the same situation; kidnapping, disappearing, torturing and murdering (Lal Masjid, Akbar Bugti, bombing Swat, FATA, Balochistan and Karachi killings) has been going on in Pakistan for the last decades based on fake propaganda war on terror and writ of the government BUT no one has been punished yet and even will not? All innocent or was acted in so called national interest. While the nation has been suffering and facing several crisis and disaster.
In one of the cases the FIA chief prosecutor got assasinated. Must it have caused fear in others who wanted to prosecute?
Good relief for Musharraf. An impression was being created that his fate will go the way of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto,who was hanged to death. Eventually,Musharraf will be allowed to leave Pakistan,which will be ideal thing to do. What about action against lawyers who indulged in violence,outside Rawalpindi High Court?
Well done Saudi Arabia.
@Abid Mohiiuddin: I fully agree withyou.
@Aysha: You are right.
There was nothing in the case. No written orders from the the prime minister, president or anyone else in the government. Even there was no detention. The judges were at their homes.
@Enlightened:
nonsense. PM has rejected any foreign intervention of any kind, and behind the scenes news leaks show that he very much wants to clear his name from fake politicized cases. he will not leave the country.
In a 'fair' and 'just' court of law, this concocted case and the other 'fake' cases filed against PM have no merit anyways, unless the judiciary keep acting the vengeful & biased way(the way have been acting so far)...I guess some one gave them a warning to behave and handle these cases on merit, and the logical result of judiciary handling these cases on merit and just way would be....all of the these fabricated cases will be thrown out of the window..InshaAllah
I had commented on ET about one month back that some foreign powers are working behind the scene to bail out Musharraf for his safe exit from Pakistan.
God is helping Pervez Musharraf. May Allah bless him and his followers.....
A trip to Aabpara or Pindi can do wonders in terms enlightening one's sense of patriotism :D
When asked by a reporter how exactly would the country benefit from this move, Ghuman failed to reply.
Kudos to the reporter for asking an obvious question. Come to think about it - I believe this is the first ET article that has mentioned a reporter actually asking a question - I was beginning to believe it wasn't allowed in Pakistan.
How sad that the spell check option does not auto-correct the writing style of a child.
FIA = "FIR" alocal = "a local" peruse = "pursue"
Overall composition = below average Grammatical errors = more than the paragraph count.
This is not fair! What is national interest? It is bogus. You cannot blame a person once then let him off under national interest. It is even bad for Musharraf himself in long run.
What a joke this proves all this was done to bar Perveiz Musharraf from contesting the elections. Likewise all cases will be withdrawn. Just because Musharraf would have brought prosperity to the nation. Pakistanis deserve the misery they are in perhaps worse and the shareef brothers will definitely make sure of that just like zardari did.
@Aqalmand: So any general can take over the country illegaly and become a dictator and there will be no consequences? Shame that Pakistanis don't have the the most basic understanding that anyone who breaks the law - even a General- should have to face justice.
Well done GOD bless you, something good to hear.
Was it national interest or securing his personal life? Establishment in Acton.
This was just a trick to keep Musharraf away from the elcetions .Now Masha Allah Musharraf will come out clean in all three politically motivated cases .
I demand chief elecetion comissioner to declare the elcton null and void , immediate release and conducting reelction in the whole country as the above case prevented musharraf party from participating in elections and this is a prepoll rigging by all standards
Apparently the West seems to be the darling of nawaz who will sell pkaistan to India
Ijaz-ul-Haq said few days ago that Musharraf will be out of Pakistan before Nawaz Sharif takes over as PM, and this is a step in that direction. Obviously forces who do not want a trial of a former COAS are working behind the scenes, and yet again we will see that justice will not be served.
Justice was already not there when Pervez Musharraf who actually gave progress to this country was not allowed to contest in these elections,while all the proven corrupt MNAs,MPAs and politicians were contesting in the elections again.It saddens me to see the bias that has been created by the media and corrupt institutions against this honest and patriotic man. Shame on our country and shame on the people of Pakistan for their lack of research.
Pakistan is a Joke and made up of Jokers.
All past and newly elected leaders have failed Pakistan and have been responsible directly or indirectly for the frauds, corruption, bank looting, electric theft, water theft and much more. Musharraf with NRO acted like great Nelson Mandela of South Africa which allowed his nation to progress instead of bloodshed and destruction. Lets together move Pakistan FORWARD and not waste time going after each other. Public apology by all leaders that did wrong is still due.
In the end, Musharraf will walk away with his head held high, Insha Allah. Strangely, electronic media is keeping mum on this important development.
so basically it was just to keep him away from elections :P because he was seemingly a strong contender.
Dropping the case " ...in the better interest of the country”
What does that even mean?
Realized national interest rite after elections.
InshaAllah!! All cases will be withdrawn!
Finally sanity prevailed.
Knew this was coming; there is no law in this land people have no integrity
National intrest is that the violators of the law be brought to justice, not let go.
Yet another injustice done to the mother land and its people in the name of Nazriya-e-Zaroorat
Good decision. Targeting one person on the basis of personal vendettas would not solve the problem. The country is facing astronomical challenges including education, finance, energy. For once, people and politicians of all stripes should unite for Pakistan. Just for Pakistan!
Good job done!!!
