PESHAWAR:

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Tuesday was told the process of recovering Gomal Zam Dam workers abducted in August last year is underway and was only delayed due to the general elections.

Wapda Director Security Colonel Mateen informed a division bench headed by PHC Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan and comprising Justice Irshad Qaisar the people tasked with negotiating with the kidnappers had been busy with the election process. This, he added, had caused delays in the recovery of the workers.

Mateen said Wapda was in close contact with tribal officials as well as the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) governor regarding the matter.

The bench urged the power authority to expedite the process and ensure the safe recovery of the abducted workers. The case was later adjourned till June 6.

Around nine Wapda workers working on the Gomal Zam Dam project in South Waziristan Agency were abducted by militants in August last year. One Frontier Works Organisation employee was later said to be killed by the abductors.

According to family members of the abducted men, the militants demanded a huge amount of ransom along with the release of some high profile militants.
