GUJRANWALA: At least 40 inmates at the Gujranwala Central Jail have been diagnosed HIV/AIDS positive, The Express Tribune has learnt.

Jail officials said the rest of the inmates would now be tested for infection. They said blood samples of 40 inmates had been sent to the Civil Hospital laboratory for HIV/AIDS screening last week after some of them fell ill. They said it was shocking to see them all test positive.

Dr Tanveer, a pathologist at the hospital told The Express Tribune that most of the 40 men were drug addicts and shared syringes. He said after all the prisoners were tested, the patients would be referred for treatment under the Punjab AIDS Programme in Lahore.
