Mumbai Indians moved to second place in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after a relatively comfortable five-wicket win over Pune Warriors who continue languishing at the bottom of the table.

After pacemen Mitchell Johnson, Lasith Malinga and India’s Abu Nechim equally shared six wickets among them to restrict Pune to a paltry 112, Mumbai chased down the target in the 19th over to register their ninth win in 13 games.

Captain Rohit Sharma hit a composed 37 off 41 balls and Ambati Rayadu made 26 as Mumbai had few issues in crossing the finish line.

The defeat was Pune’s 12th during the ongoing IPL and left captain Aaron Finch disappointed. “I thought we had a really good start,” said Finch. “But fall of wickets didn’t help. Now we have three days before we play our next match.”

His counterpart Sharma was a pleased man. “All credit goes to the team,” said Sharma. “Whatever changes I made on the field, the players responded well. We should carry the same momentum.”
