A youth was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly raping an eight-year-old girl.
The child was taken to the district headquarters hospital, where doctors treating her said that her condition was critical.
Dijkot police said that the child had gone into the field near her house, from where she was picked up by the suspect and taken to a sugarcane field a few kilometres away. They said some passers-by heard the child scream and started looking for her.
On seeing them, they said, the suspect fled.
The girl was taken to DHQ hospital, where she was reported to be in critical condition.
Her family were then informed and reported the matter to the police.
A doctor at the emergency ward told The Express Tribune that there were bruises on the child’s body. She said the medico-legal examination had taken place. She said the report was not immediately available.
Station House Officer Inspector Bilal Mansoor said that the suspect, identified by the witnesses, was arrested from his house.
He said a case has been registered against him under Section 376 (punishment for rape). He said, more sections might be added after the medical examination report was received.
