JAMMU: Following the attack on a Pakistani prisoner in Indian jail, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry demanded the immediate transfer of the inmate, who had received serious head injuries, for better treatment.

The Foreign Office also summoned Deputy Indian High Commissioner to launch a strong protest against the incident.

Pakistani prisoner was badly beaten with a sharp object by a fellow inmate in an Indian jail on Friday in apparent revenge for a fatal attack on an Indian spy Sarabjit Singh.

Sanaullah Haq was being treated for severe head injuries in hospital in Jammu.

"He was rushed to Jammu Medical College Hospital in critical condition as he had suffered severe head injury in the attack. We are making arrangements for critical care ambulance to shift him to Chandigarh or New Delhi for treatment," said Rajni Sehgal, superintendent of the Kot Balwal jail where the attack happened.

The assault came a day after the death of Singh, convicted of spying and bomb blasts in Pakistan. He was hospitalised last week after two inmates attacked him in jail in Lahore.

India's government and his family maintain he was an innocent farmer and he is considered a martyr by many in India.

Several Indian states beefed up security in their jails. Many states already keep Pakistani prisoners segregated from their Indian counterparts.

Pakistan said the assault on Haq was "condemnable" and called on India to punish the attacker. India said it regretted the incident and promised consular access to Haq once his condition had stabilised.

The superintendent of the jail was suspended and an investigation launched in to the attack.

@Antebellum:

No condemnation from Beena Sarwar, Asma Jahangir, Raza Rumi and the likes this time?

Why should there be a condemnation from them? They are Pakistanis and their main concern is what goes on in their own country Pakistan. Its not like Pakistanis have solved their own issues that they can start criticising others. sab say pehlay Pakistan.
