Labour Day rally: Legislation for informal sector workers demanded

Participants demanded enactment of laws allowing informal workers to establish trade unions.

Participants of a rally organised on Wednesday to mark the International Labour Day stressed the need for a legal mechanism to ensure workers in informal sectors got their rights.


The rally was organised by the Association of Women for Awareness and Motivation (AWAM), the Lady Health Workers Association and the Awami Workers Party (AWP).

It marched from the Press Club to the Clock Tower. The participants demanded that the government constitute a commission to ensure the enforcement of labour laws, the labour policy and the International Labour Organisation conventions.

Surayya Vaseer and Afsheen Patras of AWAM, Suneel Malik of the Peace and Human Development Foundation, Zarina Arif of the AWP and Amina Zaman of the Agency for Sustainable Development led the rally.

They also stressed the need for protection of women workers. They also demanded enactment of laws allowing informal workers to establish trade unions.
