“The [construction] strategy will focus on the development of basic facilities and amenities as a prerequisite,” Qureshi told experts from renowned international firms - the Doxiadis Associates from Greece and RMJM architects from the UK - as well as the national consultancy firm, Usmani and Co. Ltd. The master planning of this new residential scheme - which is being constructed on the Super Highway - will start once the parameters are established, said Qureshi, who stressed on “the need to follow a pragmatic, holistic and nouveau approach towards development planning” and warned the firms to strictly adhere to the time lines.
Dr Pollalis of Doxiadis Associates, who is the chief designer of the project, described DHA City Karachi as “a unique and exciting project, which presents formidable challenges [in terms of] planning and designing.” He said that the “basic contours” of master planning were being developed on “progressive lines”, envisaging the development of infrastructure, such as roads, water supply, renewable energy sources and a sewerage system “of an international standard”.
The initial master planning model will be ready by April 2011, after which the procedure of acquiring tenders for the construction of roads will be initiated, said Pollalis, who added that Geographic Information System (GIS) and satellite images have been used in the master planning and detail designing work, which will be completed by December 2011.
