According to the report, the Indian External Affairs Ministry requested Pakistan government to release Sarabjit into Indian custody so that he may be provided medical care.
“In view of the recent tragic events and present circumstances, we once again appeal to the government of Pakistan to take a sympathetic and humanitarian view of this case, and release Sarabjit Singh."
The Ministry also urged Pakistani authorities to ensure protection of other Indians currently in Pakistani jails. "It is the responsibility of the government of Pakistan to ensure the safety and security of all Indian prisoners in their custody."
Sarabjit Singh, who was sentenced to death 16 years ago on espionage charges, was rushed to the Jinnah Hospital on Friday with multiple wounds, including a severe head injury, after his fellow inmates hit him with bricks, following an altercation.
“Sarabjit’s condition is critical with multiple wounds to his head, abdomen, jaws and other body parts, and he has been put on ventilator,” a doctor in Jinnah Hospital told AFP. “He is fighting for his life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and the next 24 hours are critical,” the doctor said, adding that the head injury was ‘quite severe’.
“He needs surgery but the doctors are not performing it because they don’t want to take any chances and want him to stabilise,” he said.

Dear Reader,
Your comment on the article ''Sarabjit Singh slips into non-reversible coma: Official sources'' is now displayed on timesofindia.com.
''No doubt Sarabjit is culprit, but he is also father, husband, brother of his family. When he is declared brain dead, clinically dead, ,it is not understood why Pakistan authorities do not comply to the request of family members. Maximum, Pakistan authority can take declaration signed by nearest to Sarabjit that in case worst happens while Mr Sarabjit is on way to India, Pakistan authority is not responsible Indian govt & Pakistan govt is requested to consider this''
JAGDIP H VAISHNAV SENIOR CITIZEN
Afzal Guru, himself confessed to the crime. There is no comparison between Afzal & Sarabjeet. Also I never expected Pakistan to support such a heinous criminal.@Hammad Mian:
How many Pakistani spies Indian government has released till now and this Sarabjit Singh's current conditions may be the result/consequence of Afzal Guru's death sentence because every nature's persons are everywhere and search for the opportunities to react/retaliate and on getting chances/opportunities don't miss to react/retaliate to take the revenge..... If this is so then Pakistan also has to formally request Indian government to release all the Pakistani spies jailed in Indian jails on humanitarian grounds.....
The President of Pakistan has the constitutional authority vested in his office and must therefore pardon the accused who is a foreign natonal, serving a life sentence, has been in the prison for a considerable period, has now been subjected to the attacks of fellow prisoners, while his loved ones are suffering as well.. Fogiveness is what is needed now and this is Godly!
@Hammad Our authorities did not not let Guru & Kasab get bludgeoned by cell mates even though the intent would most definitely have existed. They were given adequate protection & medical care while justice was taking its course.
His identity was never verified or proved in court and no forensic evidence was provided at his trial to link him to the bomb attacks. The trial was conducted in English, whereas Sarabjit does not speak or understand English, and an interpreter was not provided. There were other serious questions over the fairness of his trial, including allegations that he was tortured in custody and forced to confess" The trial was fast-tracked and the main witness repeatedly changed his version of events.
Whatever secrets it is feared that he knows must be obsolete by now as he was in prison for years now and things have changed so much, so i don't see much logic behind this hysteria.
We must let go of our stupid egos and foreign induced hate, which is serving in the best interest of west and hindering the progress / development of this region, and think what is best for the future of this country.
Letting this man go, for the greater cause, can supplement the peace process otherwise we'll be always fighting and digging our own grave deeper and deeper.
@sensible: umm....wasnt Afzal Guru an Inidian citizen?....No?
@SGJ72: It is india who is intruding in the Balochistan and FATA areas by sending their militants and giving them weapons to destabilize Pakistan. See the facts and figures.
Pakistan has already released one of your spy in recent past (sarjeet singh) on humanitarian ground.....whereas india has never ever showed any such gesture...
@Poonam: What tit for tat...?the killing is already been going on in indian jails...count the bodies they have sent to Pakistan and how much indian prisoners have been released by Pakistan in past six years....
@Salman: Come to reality and don't live in fools paradise
@sensible: Who are you to request? Is he your citizen? or you go by the logic that all terrorist of the world are Pakistani
@Salman: Really , then what about Balochistan ,FATA, etc
@sensible: How can Pakistan formally request India anything about Afzal Guru. Was he a Pakistani national ? Pakistan should have requested formally the bodies of Pakistani army personnel who lead their life for your contry during the Kargil war, but you dont Pakistan should have requested bodies of Kasab and company as they were your fellow contrymen. Afzal Guru was Indian. Accept this fact . It will better for your nation.
Tit for Tat will begin against Pakistani prisoners in India
Pakistan murders Sarabjit.
@DM: Every Kashmiri is a Pakistani citizen. You can't force people to be citizen of your country by illegally occupying their land
Please release him on humanitarian grounds. A mercy plea from Lyallpur. He has served 22 years even if he did the crime.
"“In view of the recent tragic events and present circumstances," ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Some diplomatic garbage "tragic events" actually the abject failure of the Pakistani state to ensure safety of the Indian Prisoner under its charge. Lets at least use appropriate language.
We can release him. But what about the 14 Pakistanis he murdered in 1990 and has confessed. That amounts to 14 life sentences.
@Next: Ok,according to your law...Sarabjit is a terrorist...fine..I wont contest that law...He needs to be hanged...fine....Your judges gave that ruling and your law enforcement should adhere to it... But,then why the eff arent you hanging him???
Dont you think thats a cheap shot by not providing him enough security and allowing the fellow prisoners do the dirty job instead of explaining India and the world why he was hanged??? India spent around 50crores on the security of Kasab even though he was convicted beyond doubt...
As far as Afzal Guru,if one plan to attack the parliament of a country and hold them hostage...He will be punished and he got it....He was hanged almost a decade after he was sentenced...He didnt try to contest his verdict even though he had a publicized trial...He was asking for mercy, which itself proves that he committed the crime
@Ali Khan: Endians??? Oooh...Nice wordplay..Pray for ur End to come soon
@ All Indians here and sympathizers of this terrorist Hurbajeet. Yes you are right we shouldn't compate Hurbajet with freedom fighter Agzal Guru. He should be compared Ajmal Kasab and should be treated in the same way as India treated Ajmal. PS: I had my breakfast and lunch.
Has India forgotten how they played a key role in dividing East & West Pakistan. India should have thought about humanitarian grounds before sending a spy into Pakistan. Let this be a lesson for all those who conspire to spy on Pakistan that they will never be let out and will get life imprisonment.
@Ali Khan: If Afzal Guru had procured a passport, driving license, ration card,it would show him as an Indian....He lives in Indian land,he paid tax to Indian govt...He was given trial by Indian law and he appealed for mercy to the Indian President...Nowhere did his family ask Pakistani govt to release him as Sarabjit's kin are asking Indian govt
FYI,the foreign nationals who come to visit Srinagar get an Indian visa not a Pakistani visa...I hope I made my point clear....
@Khan Gul: I am a pakistani and from peshawar a can smell you indian troll.changing name wont hide you from us ENDIAN troll.
strong text@1984: For your information Afzal guru was not Endian he was a Kashmir for your info Kashmir belong to Pakistan it is a disputed territory. @Karan:
Ask for grounds this country understands and this is not humanitarian. Remember Rymond Devis.
India ...Kesi batein kart ho bacha ?
Law is supreme to all. If he is found guilty on any count he should be punished as per Law. Simple!!!!
Indians are not able to comprehend why Afzal Guru's name is coming up. It doesn't matter he is an Indian citizen, he revolted against Kafir regime, so he is very much a beloved martyr of islam. Whole Pakistan loves him.
I don't understand the moronic excuse being given by indians here. What difference does it make if Sarabjit Singh is not a Pakistani citizen? He's a convicted terrorist and a spy....heck if it was possible he should be given TWICE the punishment given to Afzal Guru.
@1984: So you guys didn't bother to give a humanitarian treatment to one of your own (as you preach) but expect others to do it for your citizens?
What you guys did to Afzal & his family, even your enemies shouldn't do it. Yet you did being his own people. At least India had given his body to his family members. A dead body wasn't a big threat was it?
As far as Sarabjit, he is a terrorist in our books and a prisoner awaiting his death penalty. Even then, Pakistan allowed the family members to visit a "proven terrorist" in hospital. Isn't it humanitarian enough?
To Everybody crying out for the rights of the innocent victims.
Where are your voices for the innocent victims being killed every day by bomb blasts every day?
Talk about double standards.
I think he was arrested on human grounds. Several humans were killed on the ground when this indian agent caused bomb blasts.
I see a lot many comments on comparing this case with that of Afzal guru, I am not saying if Afzal's hanging was right or wrong but am surprised as Afzal was an Indian citizen..
It is not Pakistani Govt but victims of surbejit singh cruel act should be asked to allow or not. He is raw agent which is confirmed.
@ohdear: Is it me or are you really that ignorant to not realize the fact of the situation?
One Sarabjit Singh is a Foreigner and Afzal Guru was a citizen of the country.
There is no comparison between the two.
Lastly I took a closer look at Singh's picture. I think he looks like a movie Hero more like Anil Kapoor. Just an observation.
I am not involved so it doesn't matter to me but as a human, I would like life to be preserved instead of being wasted.
Lastly I think we should contact the UAE Govt for an Air Ambulance to Air Lift him to maybe Manchester or Birmingham so that they can operate on this prisoner.
@ohdear: I am a Pakisatni from Peshawar. I believe in compassion and mercy. I want to count my vote in the block of people asking for release of Sarabjeet.
Every Pakistani is a terrorist but indian's were born as angels..everything wrong is done by isi whereas Raw does not carry out any activities..humanitarian grounds?? what about the Pakistani's this sarbajit killed in the bomb??Pakistani courts are corrupt while indian courts are free of corruption..lol lol lol..
Mr. India where were your humanitarian grounds when you hanged Afzal Guru. We can not accept this one way policy.
@ohdear: killing innocent is not right and afzal guru wasn't a innocent man . he confessed terrorist act himself . while sarbjit is innocent.
Not just afzal guru but Ajmal Qassab too.....they could have released him too but instead they hanged him.......Ajmal wasn't sent by the government but Sarabjeet was.
And fights and attacks do happen in jails around the world...it's nothing new or exceptional
You can not let him go if he is charged with espionage you do not know what he knows or has done here
OK, then we should formally request them to hand over body of Afzal Guru to his family on "humanitatian grounds" fair enough right?
Pakistan should do well to reciprocate India's gesture of releasing the critically injured prisoner on death row which would go long way in improving relations between two countries and the same is also on merit of the case.
Pakistan should deal with Sarabjit Singh on the same humanitarian grounds as India dealt with Afzal Guru.
