KARACHI:

Dressed in an off-white shalwar kameez and leather chappals, he has an unmistakably humble stance coupled with a firm, almost naive resolve when he talks. Gul Muhammad Keeriyo is PTI’s candidate from NA-213 constituency in Nawabshah (Shaheed Benazirabad district).

Gul owns just 12 acres of land. He had just Rs300,000 in savings and one jewellery set of his wife which she willingly volunteered to sell for his election campaign as she was willing to make a sacrifice for change. “When I discussed it with my wife, I told her ‘what if this jewellery set were to get robbed tomorrow? Why not use it for a good cause by free will?’ And she agreed saying ‘I am doing this for a better Pakistan for my children’.”

“It all started when I saw Khan sahab’s jalsa of October 30th 2011 on television, which he held at Minar-e-Pakistan. I was convinced that very moment that this is the solution to what this nation is going through. Khan sahib sacha aadmi hai. Aadmi ka pata chal jata hai baji (Khan is an honest man; one can tell what people are inside),” says Gul, who had gone to the local PTI office the very next day and joined as a PTI worker. With hard work and encouragement from Qazi Nadeem Siddiqui, district president of PTI of the area, Gul climbed rungs and became more active in PTI till he finally got a chance at candidature.

Gul, who proudly calls himself a sipahi (soldier) of Khan and calls Khan anmol heera (rare diamond), is inspired by Khan’s leading from the front approach. “Yes, I am a candidate against some big names. And what has to happen will happen. When my leader, the only brother of six sisters, can risk his life, why can’t I? I still have more males in the family to support me. It’s a risky business but dying for a cause is martyrdom,” he says, convinced.

Gul’s opponents include Asif Zardari’s sister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho of PPP, Inayat Ali Rind of MQM and Zahid Hussain of PML-F.

Poverty and oppression, according to Gul, have resulted in social disparity that has frustrated people to the point that it has affected the law and order situation adversely of late, even in rural areas. “Or women’s gold bangles are cut off from their hands when they travel in rickshaws. Our mobiles are snatched when we go to drop our kids to school on bikes. It is not just about economics. It is about self-respect as the people of this country, something we are losing fast.”

All who care to read this, including ET, give the man a break and appreciate his momentous decision and start spreading more news about him and his burning desire to see and rebuild a new Pakistan, confident in the future and firm in its stride.

The ticket allocation process of PTI that allowed this man to get an NA ticket is impressive. I understand MQM also allows people from humble background to get positions of responsibility. More such parties will broaden political participation and usher in true democracy. How I wish though that this party which has done many courageous and pathbreaking things including the intraparty elections showed the same courage against terrorism which is a cancer eating your country and hurting your neighbors as well. Anyway this is certainly a heartwarming story. Kudos to this man and PTI for giving him this opportunity.

I want to ask the PPP and PML-N workers and supporter how many Gul Muhammad Keeriyo like people they have in their parties.

PPP and PML-N are family limited businesses who are owned by Bhuttos and Sharifs. The common worker of these parties can not occupy any senior positions in these party.

What a shame for those who still support these parties (PPP & PML-N) who have brought corruption, devastation and economic disasters to Pakistan.

I never thought that some young will sell their principles and innerself to PML-N against a mere laptop. We should be proud to those who have not done this. The youth must come out of their houses and vote for PTI.

PML-N will construct another ‘Mahal’ for Sharifs if they got punjab government again (God Forbid).

@Sirf Pakistani: This man seems very clever. He has no stakes. Even the money is not his own.If he could qualify to get party ticket of MQM he did not need selling the jewelry. MQM dont expect the candidates to spend money out of their pockets and earn it back by way of corrupt practices when they are elected. This system is working well for more than 20 years. They have contested nine elections in Pakistan. It is twelfth in addition to participation in local bodies elections.

I know the elections are over and I am not sure if this candidate won.
But sorry guys! This is NOT Naya Pakistan!

Selling jewellery so that you can have a jalsa and give food to all those who are just there for fun? So that the money can be spent on banners that will not reap any benefit for anyone?

Doesn’t sound that logical to me.

Imran was winning elections but due to senile and partial caretaker government and weak election commission the results were disappointing. This called poor fielding on the part of captain. He did not dod proper fielding for the rigging.

    .
Not only that. The compensation should be double of that as it should be matched Rupee by Rupee by his beloved leader.
    .
(Sorry, keep forgetting that his idol has no source of income.)
