Karzai's office says patience is running out with Pakistan, seen by the West as a key player in brokering peace with Taliban insurgents who have been battling the Kabul government and US-led foreign forces since 2001.
US Secretary of State John Kerry will host Wednesday's talks between Karzai and Pakistan's army chief General Ashfaq Kayani, along with other senior officials on both sides.
Kerry said Monday the aim was to "try to talk about how we can advance this process in the simplest, most cooperative, most cogent way" to satisfy Pakistan's and Afghanistan's interests and end up with "a stable and peaceful Afghanistan".
Relations between Islamabad and Kabul, strained for years, appeared to make headway earlier in the year but have once again nosedived. The Taliban still refuse in public to negotiate with Karzai's government.
"Pakistan has not taken practical measures towards the Afghan peace process so far. Afghans are running out of patience," Karzai's spokesman Aimal Faizi said Monday.
Afghanistan says Pakistan, which backed the 1996-2001 Taliban regime, continues to support the insurgents to counter the influence of arch-rival India.
Pakistan’s foreign ministry said Monday it "remains committed to continue its positive and constructive role towards a durable peace in Afghanistan".
Relations had improved between the countries, building up to a three-way summit hosted by Britain in February to try to find an end to the war.
But Faizi last month said Pakistan had now abandoned the peace process and imposed "impossible" preconditions on any further discussions.
Pakistan has released at least 26 Afghan Taliban prisoners in recent months - a move that Kabul welcomed in the hope that they could help persuade the Taliban to enter into peace talks.
But there is little evidence that the prisoners have done so and Kabul is now increasingly impatient that other detainees, including former Afghan Taliban deputy leader Abdul Ghani Baradar, have not been handed over.

Running out of patience..Hmmmm. Thats rich coming from the guy whose boss has just accepted taking wads of money!!
@Iqbal: it is indeed Afghanistan that is considered a failed state - the nato nations helping it to establish its non existent institutions, that often turn on its trainers if you follow the news. Pakistan has since its birth had all its institutions and financial sector well in place - good governance lacking in both nations, the difference being our politicians are being called to task by an independent judiciary, civil society and press. A failed state is that where the institutions crumble or are non existent.....
@h chaudry
You mean the US war that Pakistan supports is feeding Pakistan
Which means that the suffering of Pashtuns is feeding Pakistan. Got shame? Speak truth
@ All Indians - Its been over decades these Afghan refugees are living in Pakistan. DONT tell us about Afghanistan and its History. We know as we are feeding them! Do you want them ?
@ Singh Kabul is already ruled by Taliban, they even charge Toll on the road that NATO built and no one is able to do any thing about it. Northern Alliance will capitulate to these Taliban.
The real peace will come when all parties will sit, Afghans go back. Hopefully!
Import missiles from N Korea and naming them after Afghan, Turkish , Persian conquerors. Yes unique indeed.
@sundeep: Thanks a lot for your suggestion and bye bye. :)
Yuri wrote "Pakistan even names its missiles to honor its Afghan conquerors rather than anybody born in Present day Pakistan."
So true. Could not stop laughing.
@waseem sarwar: Mr. Waseem ur comment is appriciable. I salute u. :-) With love
Correction! Raiders from Kabul used to devastate Indian rulers.
Calm down guys, we must not be angry. they are our Muslim brothers and sisters and they will come around.
@Sher Shah Suri: bro we shall gift you all area till Attock back if Israel pulls out of Palestinian territory. :) I always give it a laugh when my countrymen demand about Kashmir and you people expect us to give you a whole province so that you patience doesn't end with us? soon and hopefully very soon, we shall prefer a secular India over brotherhood of Afghans and KSA.
@Babablacksheep: We are already hoisting lot of ex Pakistani(Bangladeshi) in our country and that also without any western aid
@Jehangir: Because Afghanistan knows that elections in Pakistan are meaningless. Real power lies in the hand or army
@Atif Ejaz: @ab:Yes for last 30 years you have worked very hard to make Afghanistan very peaceful. Height of shamelessness. You people in order to get arms and money from west have destroyed Afghanistan and here you are trying to show a very high moral standard.
@Waseem Sarwar: No they will make Pakistan more peaceful like they are doing it now
@Mubashir: Mind your own business and stop considerding Afganistan your fifth state then you no need to loose your patiences
Pakistanis better take his words seriously. After all, Afghans repeatedly crushed the ancestors of present day Pakistanis throughout history. So much so , Pakistan even names its missiles to honor its Afghan conquerors rather than anybody born in Present day Pakistan.
@Kaleem: Your comments show true face of Pakistan. Your people say Indian is try to show its hegemony where you call your neighouring country your fifth state and its elected head as your billi shows your true color.
@Karzai,, lets suppose your patience runs out.... so what???
Let’s face the fact that certain challenges still remain in stabilizing the region. But the ultimate goal of defeating terrorism still remains the same. We’ve already learned that we cannot be on opposite sides of the fence if we want to achieve our common objectives in the region. We’ve seen how our differences with Pakistan in the past only shifted the advantage to our common enemies. Therefore, we wish to see the regional partners keep an open line of communication and work out any differences that are allowing the blame game to succeed at the moment. It must be noted that the common goal here is to address our shared concerns, so we can continue our mission of restoring peace in the region. We simply wish to see the regional partners working together for the sake of defeating our common enemies. We cannot have a safe and stable region without a safe and stable Pakistan and Afghanistan. We restate what Gen Joseph F. Dunford Jr., ISAF Commander, said recently: “The Pakistanis, the Afghans, and the international community all desire peace and security in the region. These (tripartite commission) meetings are important to achieving that goal as we continue to explore ways to expand our relationship.”
Ali Khan
My Pakistani friend need to understand one thing i.e when Taliban rule Kabul with help of Pakistan they couldn't get rid of Northern Alliance (at that time NA was not so power full). Now when NA is in power how can Taliban will take over Kabul? Keep in mind Taliban & NA, both are Afghani warrior. It will not cup of tea for Taliban. Right now NA behaving due to international forces in Afghanistan but later on they will respond in same manner to Taliban. I think Taliban will learn bitter lesson & on run after International forces leave Afghanistan. As NA will not have any restrain on them & will react viciously to revenge the savagery of Taliban. So Pakistan need to choose the right side to have peace within Pakistan. It is common sense suggestion. ( But I know Pakistan Army always do opposite to common sense)
@Iqbal: Withhold your negativity until May 11, sir.
@Kaleem: No dear thnx for offer. We r nt able to do. our more than 40 % population is still strugling for " roti" " kapda" " makan".
Our citizen is our top priority.
We can fight for afgan bt cant given them selter on INDIAN soil
Mr Karzai, you are not the only one. The whole world has lost patience with my country of birth. In case you did not notice, that is the main reason why it is a failed nation.
President Karzai should calm down and wait for Imran Khan to take charge. Imran will pull out Pakistani troops from troubled areas, which means complete Independence of his friends who would establish Islamic Emirates of Tribal Areas. There will be no Pakistan and Afghanistan common border and it would also solve all our problems.
@Atif Ejaz
Pakistanis and Indians smell alike, how do you distinguish the curry smell? Afghanistan will have better ties with India than with Pakistan and that is something Pakistan has to get used to.
@Rj786, Get this money and take these 35 lac refugees to India. It takes a heart to accept refugees, isnt it?
I wonder how it feels to say one thing and do another as a nation. And help proliferate decades of wars on your neighbors. What kind of future does that nation intend? One not very admirable.
@AA:
This is poor Afghan's 4 decade of history...... Poor Afghans always were played by foreign forces, most of their wars and deaths are for foreign purposes and they cannot live without fighting....i.e.
Afghans, along with HINDUSTAN, tried to attack PAKISTAN to reclaim their piece of land (even though the people of that land considers themselves PAKISTANI...LoL!!!)
Afghans fought AMERICAN war against Russia in 70's
in late 80's and 90's Afghans could not find a foreign cause to fight so they started fighting among themselves and became proxies of HINDUSTAN / PAKISTAN, SAUDIA, UAE.
After 9/11 Afghans again found a foreign help to start fighting among themselves.
Today, when the west is about to leave now poor Afghans want another cause to keep fighting....This time as Afghan govt/military is full of Northern Alliance militants (INDIAN proxies) so they will use their "INDIAN Training" of keep blaming PAKISTAN.....LoL!!! Poor Afghans....... I really feel sorry for them.
By the way Afghan patience has no relevance for PAKISTAN.
@Atif Ejaz: But you see- Afghanistan is not some Colony of Pakistan. It is a historically Independent and proud Country that have time and again defeated even World's Superpowers. It will act as its national Interest directs and can in no way take any strings from Pindi. That is tantamount to bartering away its sovereignty.
To give you an analogy -> How would any Pakistani react if I say - Preconditions for India's non-meddling in Pakistan are clear, No Chinese smell in Pakistan Soil. We need a peaceful neighbourhood. We cannot afford another China on our Pakistan Border. The most likely answer in my view would be-> Mind your own business!
@Kaleem: Isn't that part of the problem that you think Afghanistan is "hamari billi"?
Some times i wonder why we are so tolerant with Afghanistan from the day one of our creation they are against us and they will continue to do that as long as persian speaking afghani are in power. Unfortunately American made a blunder mistake instead of taking control themselves of Kabul they allowed power to norther alliance which is the main reason till today there is no stable peace. There is no doubt that some pakistani factor is involves in stability but people must understand Pakistan need to secure its own interest considering India growing un-necessary influence at our backdoor.
We suffered badly from them a huge number of heroin addicted peoples in our country are their gift to us including weapons on the streets and their protection and supplies to Baluchi rebels leaders just to name it and still some quarters talk that why pakistan is keen securing his interest in Afghanistan do we have any choice?
let us hope for a peace in Afghanistan which also prove safe for us but if anybody think ignoring our country security can bring peace there is un-realistic dream as to Karzai a simple word just shut up and take care of your affairs themselves instead blaming others.
Also American need to push them to understand pakistan legitimate concerns and pressure India to avoid un-necessary influence in Afghanistan I am sure if this happens peace can return and each and everyone can live with peace and in harmony.
@Rj786: then why not u take them & make "Huge" amount.
Its foolish of Karzai to expect Pakistan to behave rationally. Pakistan's India phobia compells it to do things that are most harmful to Pakistan first. Support of terrorist groups like taliban is one such.
@Waseem Sarwar: Don't you worry!! Simple question brother - have you heard of The Afghan city of Attock? If the answer is yes! Then we have solved our little problem. If the answer is - no! Then google it and Sir Mortimor Durrand! Hope this solves you refugee problem because there never has been an Afghan refugee.
@Sher Shah Suri: i think no country in world will take 3 millions refuges who spread violence for international donations so why don't you take back your loved ones and take all the aid too?
@Sufia: sometimes 'ignorance is blessing' indeed, but not all the time.
Dear what pakistan today is due to afghan blood,, the money circulation on lahore roads are from afghans blood,, who is dieing in pakistan afghan in kpk,, plz stop double role with world,, no more be clever ,, its enough , world understand what people you are doing
@Sufia: Dear if u hv accepted refuee. It was nt free of cost. U hv been paied huge amont for same.
@Opinion: Not only Indian but also American as well.
Preconditions are clear; no Indian smell on Afghan soil, we need a peaceful neighbourhood. We cannot afford another India on our Afghan Border.
In reply to Khan(?) - for more the 30 years Pakistan has used international donations ment for Afghan Refugees to keep itself from gong bankrupt! Simple question- where was Osama bin Ladin found? Next to Pakistan version of Sandurst!! Let Afghans recognise who is friend and who is our enemy. Then we can make progress!
Its truly Indian tongue in karzai's mouth .
Karzai a funny man!
actually your time is running out
seek refuge in our country and then taunt us, please go back to your country and see what it is like there. Regards from a Pakistani!
If Pakistan is a terrorist country, how come Afghanistan is allowing 3.5 million of its people to live here? In fact, Karzai, it is we Pakistanis who are losing patience with Afghanistan: it is us who is harboring the largest refugee population in the world. That too a population that does nothing except beg and steal and pick scraps for a living. It was this population that brought guns and drugs to this side of the border, not to mention somethng called the "Taliban". Why not just banish all the refugees back to their home country?
"US Secretary of State John Kerry will host Wednesday’s talks between Karzai and Pakistan’s army chief General Ashfaq Kayani".... why does US always prefer to hold talks with Army chief in Pakistan? As long as they don't prefer civilians over military, things would not change.
US is leaving. No more dollars for Karzai and Pakistan HAhA Karzai and Pakistan will go broke after making money
Let it be run out once, see what Karzai has to do then.
Pakistan is going through an election process. Everyone except Afghan understand that at this juncture no major decision can be taken. Even US is waiting for the next government. How hard is it for Afghans to understand this simple fact?
Being minor, ignored!!!
Make a permanent wall on all the border and send all the refugees back, so they wont come back again. some people understands in there own language.
His authority doesn't imply outside of Kabul and he is saying patience running out with Pakistan. How funny!!
What are those impossible preconditions, can someone shed light on it.
Afghanistan losing patience with Pakistan - why I think it should be entirely the other way around. Pakistan has been very patient with the largest refugee population worldwide - the Afghans for more than two decades - open your eyes Karzai - at a horrific economic/socio cost to it. Twenty six Talibans released refuse to deal with you Karzai, Pakistan is not responsible for their attitude. Good that General Kayani will be in Brussels, he has proven many a times to hold the interests of his nation first....
Time running out for Karzai's government too. btw what exactly will Afghanistan do when their patience with Pakistan ends? Will they call back 30 lakh Afghan refuses who are playing an important role in making Pakistan a "better" country?
Afghan Government is either confused or hypocrate. They call you brother and the next day you are their worst enemy.
All Afghanis should immediatly return to their beloved homeland!! Our Patience is running out with Afghanistan!!
Good know what it is called in english, but in urdu there is good line for it "Hamari billi hami ko mayaun"
Patience Running Out With Afghanistan!
