Fakhrul Islam had filed papers to contest elections from Hyderabad PS-47 of the Sindh Assembly.
Islam was shot dead outside his home in Halah market by two unidentified gunmen.
People in the area reported this incident as the second or third target killing in the area.
An Express News reporter stated that Islam had not received any threats via phone or otherwise after his recent appointment as a provincial leader.
Junaid Khanzada, Express News Hyderabad Bureau Chief said this target killing would have subsequent backlash in Hyderabad and interior Sindh. He further added that the police has been ineffective in controlling violence in these areas and this incident was confirmation of the fact.
"Inexperienced police officers were recruited and they are unaware of how crime works in the city," he said.
"Security was only provided to VIPS," he added.
Police authorities and relevant MQM leaders of the Hyderabad Zone were present at the scene of the killing.
In January, MQM leader and MPA Syed Manzar Imam was shot dead by suspected Taliban gunmen in Karachi’s Orangi Town locality, along with two police guards and a driver.
Officials told the Associated Press that Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan claimed responsibility for the shooting.

@ET ....so you took out my comment as whole...not even the previous one listed here anymore. Good going. god bless you, until i ask this question again on the day of judgement! AND i am at peace, because you MUST have to answer then!
So it...started! I couldn't agree more. I am not Pro MQM or Pro Taliban. I am just pro peach and Pro Pakistani! I got the tragic news of an uncle in Pakistan who got killed in a drive by shooting just like the one in this article! WHAT IS GOING ON IN OUR COUNTRY?
I agree with DI. Khan
RIP ...... :'( Long Live Pakistan Long Live Altaf Hussain Bhai
My his soul rest in peace. The TTP cancer is not growing and has to be cut away at all costs - start by interrogating this spoksman...where is he getting this information from? should lead to some big shot terrorists...
My first shock is to read the comment of 'Voice of DI Khan", and what totally shatters my hope in Pakistan is the amount of likes his comment got.
I have never supported MQM my entire life, but commonsense says if it's mqm vs ttp, one should support MQM. TTP are animals that need to be crushed
Pathetic...
Violence can have no moral or legal justification. It only breeds violence.
The rewards of our Zia-ulistic foreign policy continues
Innalillah-e-Wainna Elahe Rajeoon.!
May rest his soul in peace and highest place of Jannah.
Well .. he is not a baby in politics. When he got ready to fight elections , he should have gotten ready to get 'hurt' too ( to put it mildly). He seems to be a seasoned politician so he should be aware of 'such' things.
@Voice of D.I.Khan: you SEEMS educated but dignity have not touched you. If you can not bend you head with same and sorrow, on murder of a fellow countryman, then no one should expect decency from people like you. I hate politician of my birth country, but I feel broken when I hear killing of anyone of them.
Moderate Sahib . you silent all logical voices, but let hate mongers to play music on dead bodies.
Some people minds are driven by their bias rather than rationale A muslim atleast should express sorrow and grief over his fellow muslim murder but alas! political rivalary get over all ethics and values
And then they say MQM is a terrorist party. To all such people, MQM is the only party which, despite of threats from TTP, is bold enough to carry its election campaign. RIP!
@Voice of D.I.Khan:
You even sound like the acronym of your city name as well as an imbecile.
Um, where is the moderator? Why was Voice of D.I.Khan's comment published?
May God Bless the deceased. Feeling sorry for him and his family. Dirty side of democracy, polls and public opinion in Pakistan.
@Voice of D.I.Khan: Shame on you.
@ Voice of DI Khan, You sir are truly pathetic.
RIP
@Voice of D.I.Khan:
Are you insane bro?? sympathy votes?? are you out of your mind seriously? Let me tell you that this party seriously need no SYMPATHY to win seats from their dominating areas. They have a respective votebank in karachi, hyd n some other cities of sindh and that would never gonna change..
Voice of Karachi
An action probably from the rival party, that do happens before elections.Shame to those who are calling it a stint for sympathy.
@Voice of D.I.Khan That is so insensitive of you to consider this as a killing for sympathy. If that were the case, some MNA would have been killed. Even if it is, atleast respect the feelings of his caretakers and family. Fakhrul Islam was just one of you, trying to make a difference by getting into assemblies against the feudalism. Please respect the soul of the departed. It could've been someone from your family, or may be yourself.
R.I.P.
@ DI Khan , some people donot have shame as such they indulge in humiliating a dead too .ET where is your moderator?
So, it started.
Trying to Win sympathy votes....???????
