Tough beat: Former MNAs, senator among those disqualified

PESHAWAR:


Veteran politicians, including a former senator and MNAs, were disqualified from contesting polls in the province. A total of 72 applications were rejected, 37 were accepted while one was withdrawn. 


In Lower Dir, four senior politicians among 18 people were disqualified. Nomination papers for former minister for state and Awami National Party (ANP) leader Malik Azmat Khan, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader and former senator Maulana Gul Naseeb’s and former MNA Dr Zakirullah Khan of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) were rejected because their degrees were not verified by the Higher Education Commission.

A three-time MPA and former MNA Dr Zakir was disqualified for hiding his expenses during a visit to Dubai.

Twelve candidates’ papers were rejected out of 27 vying for NA-34 in the area. Similarly, six candidates papers were rejected out of 30 for PK-97.

Haripur

The politics of Haripur took a new twist when Yusuf Ayub Khan, one of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) stronger candidates, had his nomination papers rejected in Hazara division for furnishing contradictory information about his educational qualifications.

Khan, former military dictator Ayub Khan’s grandson, was a candidate for the PK-50 Haripur-II seat.

Meanwhile, Ayub’s rival and former provincial minister Qazi Muhammad Asad had his papers accepted along with those of 22 others.

In PK-52, objections raised against Pakistan Muslim League–Nawaz (PML-N) Provincial Chief Pir Sabir Shah and his rival Faisal Zaman of the PTI were sidelined and both candidates’ papers were accepted. Nomination papers of PTI candidate Dr Muhammad Azhar Jadoon and his rival Tehreek Suba Hazara Chief Sardar Baba Haider Zaman were also approved for the NA-17 Abbottabad-I seat.

Swat

PML-N Central Vice President Amir Muqam’s nomination papers for the NA-30 and PK-82 constituencies were cleared. Meanwhile, former MNA Syed Allaudin Khan’s nomination papers were rejected for holding a dual nationality. Khan, a stalwart of the PPP, had submitted his application to contest for the NA-30 Swat-II constituency.

Mardan

In Mardan, nomination papers of 21 candidates contending on ANP, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), JUI-F and Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (JUP) seats as well as those of independents were rejected while nine others were accepted from various constituencies in the district.

JUI-F candidate Hafiz Akhtar Ali’s papers were not approved because his intermediate certificate was obtained from a seminary. Ali’s covering candidate Shamsur Rehman’s papers were also rejected. Likewise, ANP’s Haji Nasimur Rehman had his papers for NA-9 rejected on the grounds of being a defaulter.

In PK-23, three Muttahida Qaumi Movement candidates including Khalid Khan, Dost Muhammad, Shahid Usman and Fazal Ghani’s papers were not approved.

Additionally, ANP leader Jehanzeb Khan, PTI’s Jabbar Shah and Taj Malok of JUP were also denied from contesting in the PK-23 constituency.

Those whose papers were accepted in the district’s various constituencies included former chief minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti, Khawaja Muhammad Khan Hoti of the PML-N, ANP’s Haji Litaf, Tajul Amin Jabal of the JUI-F, former deputy speaker Ikramullah Shahid, and Nawabzada Asadullah Khan Hoti.

ANP candidate and former finance minister Nawabzada Mohsin Ali Khan’s nomination papers for PK-41 Karak were rejected after he was found to be a defaulter of the State Bank Pakistan (SBP). The returning officer told Khan his application would be accepted if he presented a no-objection certificate from the SBP today (Monday).

Hangu

In Hangu, an ANP candidate for the PK-42 Hussain Ali Shah Al Hussaini’s seat was rejected for possessing a fake degree. Five candidates’ papers for the NA-16 constituency were rejected while one candidate withdrew his paper.

Former MNA Pir Syed Haider Ali Shah was disqualified when he could not present his five -year performance report to the returning officer.

Kurram Agency

Eleven candidates were rejected in Kurram Agency, while another was rejected in Orakzai Agency. The nomination papers of nine candidates out of 48 were rejected in NA-40 North Waziristan. With reporting from correspondents across K-P.

Results of independent judiciary in Pakistan. The 2002 elections were held under the umbrella of Martial Law and the elections of 2008 were held under Dogar Court.

All the fake degreeholders and all those giving wrong undertaking about their Nationality must be punished to cleanse the augean stable!
