The incident took place in the Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh, about 100 kilometres from the capital, on Tuesday evening when the sisters, three of whom are teachers, were returning home from a government school.
"The victims were walking together when two men on a motorbike made lewd remarks and the man who was riding pillion splashed acid on all of them," Abdul Hammed, senior police officer who is investigating the case told AFP.
Hameed said no arrests had been made and the motive behind the crime was unclear.
"The youngest sister suffered maximum burn injuries and she had to be rushed to a hospital in Delhi."
Attacks on women have topped the national agenda since December 2012 when a medical student was assaulted and raped by six men on a moving bus in Delhi. She died two weeks later of her injuries.
Public anger prompted parliament to toughen sex offence laws including doubling the minimum prison sentence for gang-rape to 20 years, but lawmakers voted against making acid attacks punishable with life imprisonment.
Acid attackers can be jailed for 8-12 years depending on the injuries inflicted, but the offence is bailable.
Activists have asked that India should regulate the sale of an acid called "Tezaab" which is designed to clean rusted tools but is commonly used in attacks.

@Yoghurt Lover : You have a problem making a point without resorting to personal abuse.What point exactly is that you are trying to make,which a nincompoop like me can't understand? Perhaps if you were to make an argument than just screaming and shouting random words perhaps people might understand better.
FYI.that is my original name,why don't you come with something more original than a lover of some food product.

Man, aren't you a nincompoop? Only such a person can point out a news articles to prove a point that I never made.
Read my point a 100 times and understand what I said. I never said there's no crime against women in South India. So, you pointing out to such articles to disprove that BIMARU states are the worst in India is irrelevant and stupid.
And for god's sakes come up with your original name.

@heera:
Oh and one more thing. Some of the more reasonable (sane) Hindi speakers (which is few, as you can imagine) admit that their people are the worst.
Perhaps you need to be more reasonable.
@heera:
"Foolish comment..Dont expect every finger to be of same length"
Why? Because you have buried your head in the dirt?
Fact of the matter is, Hindi speaking belt (as 1984 put it as BIMARU belt) has the worst culture of crime/racism and misogyny.
Now they are proudly bringing this sick(BIMARU) culture to Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore.
Chidambaram rightly said that if India was just South India (4 states) and West India (3 states), we would be having 10% growth. When he uttered those words he was criticized for telling the truth.
India is held back by Hindi speakers. Thank god Delhi is not in South India. We all know who is responsible for the high crime rate in Delhi/Haryana. But to speak the truth in India is a crime.
Addendum : BIMARU was coined when MP and UP were not divided. Today Uttaranchal, Chattisgadh, Uttarkhand should be included in the BIMARU (which in Hindi means SICK) states.
For those who do not know what is BIMARU - Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. The horrible Hindi speaking belt of India. The Africa of India.
@Yoghurt lover:Foolish comment..Dont expect every finger to be of same length @1984: Why?This is not a new story.Only incompetence of pseudo secular congress and mulayam is bearing fruit now.Four school going muslim girls were acid attacked.Minority appeasement policy is taking toll now.When Deoband organization issued fatwa for muslim women to refrain from call center and PA jobs ..no body opposed their move.Muslim organisation even imposed burqua and veil in minority institutions for muslim women .Now they r settling their matter with in their law ,so why is the problem.They dont want muslim women to be educated...thats all.
There is no shame in admitting that the situation of women in my country,especially the BIMARU belt, is deteriorating everyday...I dont want to be like the other chest-thumping posters who will point at the acid attacks in Pakistan to justify ourselves...
Whatever be the case,there is no excuse for failing to protect our women...
