CID arrests DSPs’ alleged killer

KARACHI: Security forces on Tuesday claimed to have arrested a man believed to be involved in the targeted killings of four Sindh police officials.

The man, identified as Ishtiaq alias Salman, was picked up from a house in New Karachi during an operation led by SSP Omer Shahid and SSP Chaudry Aslam. CID officials said that they found a Kalashnikov and a 9mm pistol in his possession at the time of the arrest.

Ishtiaq was allegedly involved in the murders of DSP Rahim Bangash, DSP Nawaz Ranja, Inspector Nasirul Hasan and Inspector Sajid, said SSP Shahid of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) anti-extremism cell. He and his accomplices were also involved in the killing of ASI Maqsood, said Shahid, adding that criminal cases were registered against him at various police stations while the Azizabad police has also booked him for the possession of illegal weapons in 1997 and 1999.

“He has been involved in the killings of many police officials over the last three years” said Shahid, adding that his arrest was made possible by the testimonies of some of his accomplices who had been caught earlier and interrogated by the police. According to the investigators, Ishtiaq was supervising three criminal gangs, who primarily had police officials on their hit lists.

The teams operated in Landhi, New  Karachi and Liaquatabad.

“His arrest is a success for us as we feel that it will lead us to other murderers as well,” Shahid said.
