KHANEWAL/ GUJRANWALA: A candidate rode a donkey to the sessions court on Sunday to submit his nomination papers after the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf refused him a party ticket.

Former PTI district general secretary Iqbal Anjum had submitted an application to the PTI parliamentary committee for the party ticket, which was refused. To protest the party decision, he rode the donkey for two kilometers to submit his nominations for PP-97 as an independent candidate. He also carried the party flags.

A large number of people gathered around Anjum who told them that he had been refused the ticket for being poor.

Sharif’s opponent

Ashfaq Cheema reached the court in rags and said he wanted to run against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. Several people gathered around him and clapped. When Cheema submitted incomplete documents to the returning officer, he also ordered him out.

Talking to the media, Cheema said he had wanted to fight for the rights of the youth.

Election fight

Dozens of PML-N and PTI supporters traded blows on their way to the office of the returning officer in tehsil Talamba, Khanewal, on Sunday.

Former MPA Amir Hayat Hiraj was accompanied by a number of supporters who were dancing to the drum beat and raising slogans for their candidate and party. When they reached the Old Abdul Hakeem Road, they faced a procession led by PTI leader Mehr Afzal Dilu. Their supporters came to blows, following a shouting match.

Residents of the area and some shopkeepers intervened and separated the two sides.
